MOT failure because of number plate lights

MOT failure because of number plate lights
Apart from no water in the washer bottle, there's probably nothing more minor than this failure! To be fair, the garage changed the bulbs, but without success. So I've skulked home with my failure certificate and set to work, expecting it to be a simple job.
First, cleaned the contacts, then checked the wiring wasn't chaffed as it passed from boot lid to boot ... nothing. Next obvious check is the fuse, but the handbook does not list ANY rear lamps in a list of 86 fuses ... not the red driving lights, brake lights, fogs or reversing, let alone the plate illumination light" or whatever it's known as.
So, does anyone know the fuse number for this light on a 2008 S40 SE Lux Diesel?
And if I find the fuse and it's not blown, how do I use a multimeter to trace back? ... the reason I ask is that the first connector I found (immediately adjacent to the lamps) had 3 wires where I'd be expecting 2.
All help gratefully accepted.
Thanks, John

Tried that Hudini, and didn't find a fusethat had blown.
Eventually I found that there was no continuity in one of the wires in the loom which passes from the boot to the boot lid ... so I ran a parallel wire and all worked ok (and passed the MOT).
Later, I pulled all the fuses again ... and nothing turned off the lights ... I can't believe it, but they don't seem to have a fuse!
