Default Timing Belt Replacement Costs -- CO

I have a wonderful garage with trustworthy mechanics. I have been quoted $1100 to replace a cracked timing belt.

I have heard from a couple other garages about the same thing.

When I search online everyone is saying $600-850. Is CO really that much more expensive than even So. Cal. or NY?

What else do I need to know or do when I get the belt replaced?

A timing belt by itself is about $35. What exactly are they going to replace for $1100?

Normally a full service job includes the belt, tensioner, idler, and water pump. You can buy these for about $200 to $400 depending on brand

Shops cost about $100 per hour.

I would get a breakdown of what they are going to replace and how much time it's going to take.

The kit is about $200 at the dealer and includes the tensioner and idler. They might be replacing the water pump too, as Hudini mentioned. A lot of places add that on.

What year is the car?

I am sure the garage is doing all that is usually done in this instance, including water pump. I will make sure beforehand, though.

I have a 240 2003.

Labor would be about 4 hours for the timing belt kit and water pump. Parts would be around $400 if using dealer parts. So that could be correct if their labor rate is about $150 an hour, which would be high for an independent shop.

My indy shop in Maryland quoted $1200 for r&r timing belt. I left in horror without asking what they included in that price. They also wanted $250 to change the plugs.

They had been reasonable when working on an old Toyota. I got the impression they didn't want the job.

It's not that difficult. I can do it myself in a day going slow with garage tools.

You will find some that see a Volvo plus an owner with money as free cash for them. Not all shops, but some.

Thanks everyone. I got the work done. It was $1100. The garage kept the car overnight to get the work done. I am driving with confidence now!
