I've researched this issue on this forum and elsewhere but can't seem to find someone with a similar situation.

I have a 2001 Volvo S40 1.9T with around 115,000 miles.

Several nights ago, my wipers stopped while pointing straight up. They stayed this way until the next day, while driving, they swiped several times and stopped where they usually end up when turned off. I thought the problem may have been temporary, but the next morning while leaving for work I noticed the wipers had stopped working again. Several hours later I checked to see if the wipers would work again, and they did -- I left the engine off and got outside while they were on to listen for noises that might indicate the wiper motor was failing, but it sounded normal. When I got in my car to leave several hours after that the wipers weren't working again.

This doesn't appear to be just a fuse as I hoped originally and it doesn't seem to be the motor as it's not making any strange noises when it does function. Does this sound like a relay or something else? I'm going to have to bring it somewhere tomorrow most likely, but looking to have as much information and/or theories as possible so I'm not completely ripped off (as is common around these parts).

I got a call back from the shop today -- they said they don't see anything wrong with the wipers or related mechanical or electrical systems and that the wipers have worked all day for them. I'm going to be picking this up soon, but would still appreciate any theories as this seems bizarre to me. Thanks for any information in advance!

 

I have seen teh main computer go out and cause the same issue.

 

Thanks for the reply -- that seems to make sense. My wipers worked all day in the rain today, but not sure how long it will last.
