Default 2001 S60 TRANSMISSION ADVICE

After using the search feature on this forum and reading all 12 pages about S60 automatic Transmissions I learned alot of valuable information. I have a 2001 S60 2.4tw/ 163000 miles on it. I have been told the fluid is dark by Volvo as well as my mechanic. Nothing was mentioned about a burnt smell, or any upgrade. I am confused about the fluid to use Mobil 3309 or Volvo brand. Also I have had no problems but I have no idea about whether or not the fluid has been changed on recommended intervals or ever. The car seems to accelerate and change gears just fine. I would like a little further information about something i read in one of the posts about what happens when the car is at a stop going into neutral. I have not noticed this. I have been told not to mess with it by my mechanic because it will just stir up the gunk and maybe cause problems. Should I do as they say "don't fix it if it isn't broke" or do you recommend a flush and fill or a drain and fill. Last but not least. What is the part number for the 2001 S60 2.4t tranny if I should ever need one? Is it a Aisin-Warner. Thanks everyone. Fred

Hello. As far as the fluid, I think the "Volvo fluid" that the dealer wants to sell you is 3309 in a Volvo container. I just bought some Mobil 3309 from AVLubricants and I'm going to flush it myself. About half price compared to what the dealership wants.

My car has just started to shift harshly after it has warmed up so I'm just going to do it and see what happens.

I have an '01 S60 2.4 T. I just changed the fluid @ 89,300 mi using the same link as JP suggested. I also bought the hose kit and a funnel from ipd. My car was shifting harshly and the shifting has improved. My Transmission Service light was on and is now off. My car isn't shifting 100% and seems to get worse with the a/c on or when the temperature is hotter outside.

I did the full replacement process and have noticed a great difference. I plan to get the software upgrade next for the "Neutral on stop" function.

Ditto on all points except the software, which I already did and since I did it it just shifts between 4th and 5th when traveling between 30-45 like it can't decide what to do. I still need to get that fixed, just haven't gotten around to it.

Anyway, I'm glad I can relate to the problem you were having. Mine also seemed to get worse during a lot of stop & go, or just after it got really hot. Now it doesn't do it at all. I even tested it for about 45 minutes driving slowly around neighborhoods, then back in the city and it was smooth all the way.

I wouldn't do the "flush" approach.............just use the process to drain and refill and drain and refill, etc, as has been posted. The Mobile 3309 fluid is the same spec as the Volvo stuff. I plan to change my V70's fluid every 30k miles now that it has 115k miles on it...........the 2001 V70s and S60s have the same transmission and engines.

Red Line D4 and Amsoil ATF can also be used, I have heard people say that it actually improved the shifting characteristics of their Aisin Warner transmissions.
