Loose camshaft adjustment outlet side

Loose camshaft adjustment outlet side
Just purchased a 2004 s60 2.5t with 65k miles on it. After looking around the forum a bit, I decided to go to the heralded Volvo mechanic at Euro Auto Plex "John" in Chicago to get a timing belt kit installed.
After taking a look around, he said the previous owner had put sub par oil in the engine resulting in a loosening of the "V. Valve actuator" (part # 9497786). I had noticed the timing was a little off, but attributed that to the timing kit needing replacement.
He flushed the engine, and put syntehtic oil in, but said the part needed to be replaced on a 6 month timeline.
That being said, is this worth getting a new one? I have no tools so I would not be able to do myself, but are there any alternatives? Should I be concerned with getting it fixed this early? Also, is it completely necessary to buy the part from the dealer, or would an OEM part do.
Thanks!
