Default Buying a 2002 S60 AWD 2.4T with 164k miles???

I have owned a volvo before and i just recently sold my othe car and looking to buy another volvo. i found this 2002 volvo s60 AWD 2.4T for sale for a great price. Its still the original owners and they have all paperwork. the car is adult owned and never abused. the exterior is mint along with the interior. my concern is how long is the car really going to last. Its been maintained well but 164k miles is kind of alot. i drove the car it rides nice no weiard noises and doesnt leak any fluids.

So my real question is, is there anything i should be worried about with buying a volvo with 164k miles any adivce and imput willl be appreciated.

thanks mike

only thing I would make sure is that the timing belt, tensioner, and idler pulley have been changed....volvo's can run for a very long time as long as the maintenance has been kept up, and from what your telling me is that they have the records then I would not have a worry in the world....in addition you can buy one of those used car warranties they will also help give you piece of mind!!! good luck and I hope you decide to purchase the ca.

At that mileage I would be concerned about how much longer the tranny would last. I would ask if the ATF had been changed and how often. I would also have a quick look at the ATF dipstick to check the color of the oil. If it is dark black I would pass.

This is 100% correct

01-02 had some issues that needed to be addressed but as long as trany fluid was flushed i would think you should be in good shape. The transmission for that car run in the $3000-$4000 range.Cant hurt to look at the Trany dip stick and if it were me smell the fluid. If it smells burnt or is overly Black stay away.

We have a 2002 S80 with 125,000 on it and in the last year we put $3,000 into it and now this is what we are looking at. This is what the dealer wants to charge us for our 2002 S80 non turbo -- Timing belt and engine seals $1078 - Two bad engine mounts which we have already replace one before $500.00 - Spark Plugs $180.00 - 2 fuel injectors $531.00.

My husband takes very good care of our cars and we have all the records. Now we are trying to decide if we spend another $3,500 bc they also mentioned something about replacing front and rear engine field leaking for $718.00 plus it need brakes. Do we pay and hope for two more years without problems or walk away and donate car??? It's only been the last year we started having problems but it's been about every 6 months major problems pop up. So it would be $6,500 in a year for a car that would sell for maybe $3,500 with no mechanical problems. Good luck.

Get these repairs done at a good independent mechanic and not at the Volvo dealer. I would expect an indy to ask for about half of what Volvo is asking for if not less for what you listed. Volvo service is awfully expensive, easily in the same range as BMW or Mercedes (i know I owned both). For example Volvo will charge you between $400 to $500 for flushing the automatic transmission. I did it myself in less than an hour (taking my time) for $70, just the price of the tranny fluid. I got the fluid at Toyota (same exact tranny fluid) for almost a third of what Volvo was asking for their "Volvo" tranny fluid. Then add the outrageously high Volvo service prices and you quickly get to the $400 to 500 range. If you have a good indy I do not think Volvo's are that expensive to maintain although I am pretty new in the Volvo world.

At 2002 the car has no warranty so forget about them(the dealer) .As far as Volvo's go a good Indi shop that specializes in Euro cars will save you 50% in most cases and the things like a engine mount can wait or not ever be done. The dealer is looking for every little thing that they can justifiably charge you to repair. Its a shame but happens to a lot of Volvo owners.
