Default Service engine soon - is it Volvo CEL

2002 S60

It was a wind chill of -4 F this morning, started the car to let it warm a bit and saw a service engine soon light. Is this Volvo's idea of a check engine light or is it just a light that has an algorithm that illuminates the light at certain intervals?

Does the 2002 S60 use an oil life meter like my Caddie?
Will my scanner read and reset?

Yeah that is pretty much the check engine light. Any scanner will be able to read codes to a certain extent. Volvo dies not use an oil life meter they just turn on a service reminder light after a while

I purchased the car last August and had the oil changed a bit after the purchase. My wife commutes 60 miles a day with the car. A few days ago I started thinking that I should check how many miles on the last oil change.

A shop did the oil change and not sure if there was something they re-set when changing the oil. My son's 2002 Saturn L200 has a protocol to re-set a monitor after an oil change. The Saturn protocol isn't an efficient OLM like the Caddie but goes by mileage only. I hope the Volvo service reminder is just a reminder to change the oil. I have enough problems with one of my cars that constantly throws a CEL.

Owning and maintaining 6 cars can drive ya crazy.

I'll see if the light comes on again and then if it does, I'll attach my scanner.

The service engine warning light and the CEL light are each different.
If the CEL light comes on you need to check the cars vitals ASAP.
i.e. low oil pressure, low on oil, coolant temp too high or coolant low etc.

The service engine light is based on the recorded mileage covered since the last service at which the service light should have been reset.
Mine comes on every 5,000 miles or 8,000 kilometres. (2002. V40.)

None of that is accurate, sorry.

Can you elaborate please?
I am looking at my year / model owners manual re instruments and warning lights which has the CEL as No.19. and the service reminder as No.21.
Aside from a brief moment at start up the service reminder light goes out as is normal.
It stays on for about 2 mins' after start up once 8,000kms as been travelled since the last reset, on my V40. i.e. (Oil and filter change time.)
Have read somewhere in a forum but can't recall which, where the distance between reminders can actually be adjusted.
I have actually observed a complete 8,000kms cycle between oil/filter services which bore out the above , on my car .
The manual in print says 750 hours or 12 months ???
Has never done that in my ownership.

The S60 of the OP is the same year so why would their protocols be potentially different or changeable?

The S40 and S60 are different.

The service reminder light protocol is the same. 7500 miles, 750 hours or 12 months as set from the factory (on US models anyway- I can't speak for others).

The wording in the original post isn't correct, so I can't say for sure what the original poster is talking about. The service reminder on the 2002 S60 will say "Time for Regular Maintenance" in the text display as well as the "Service" light.

The wording above uses the word "Engine", which I assume means the message said "Engine System Service Required". This is an indication of a fault somewhere, similar to the check engine light.

Okay, I follow your point. Thanks ES6T
It is indeed then a different setup to mine. My apologies.

I too thought the OP's description was a little bit incorrect and in my response I now note that I also wrongly stated service warning light as opposed to 'service warning reminder'.
Have tried to find the forum / post regarding the adjusting of the factory mileage durations but without success thus far.
When I stumbled on it I was surprised it was supposedly able to be changed.I would never do it personally anyway.

No problem. The S40/V40 is quite different than the P2 platform cars, which have a text display that can display many warnings, such as Engine System Service Required, Emission System Service Required, Transmission System Service Required, etc... along with the actual "Check Engine" light. So yes, it can be confusing!

As for changing the service interval- you can't do it without VIDA.

Time for regular service

The title of my post was incorrect, my wife had already left for work and I was working off memory.

Ah yes memory, something that I once had.

This morning I went out in the arctic temps to check on the wording and the wording is Time for Regular Service.

So from what I've read, the message is a reminder and not an immediate failure warning.

Do shops re-set any oil change interval switch on these cars? The oil was changed at 198,776 and current mileage is 202,947. That is a little over 4,000 miles on the oil change and maybe we are getting a reminder to change the oil?

Because my wife's commute is 90% highway, the Caddie's OLM would give her at least a 4,000 to 5,000 range for oil changes. Think I'll follow the same for the Volvo.

Okay then that is just the service reminder. It comes on every 7500 miles, 750 engine hours or 12 months. Some shops reset it and some don't know how.

That's good.

I'll try to use a protocol that I found to reset it.

How do you reset the computer after you change your own oil, on a 2012 S60 T5?
