Have a 08 s60 25T,has a crazy starting issue,wont start sometimes?,leave it overnite,try to start and it just turns over,leave it a bit and it might start?.also have to pump the pedal to get it to start,but doesnt work all the time?,have no lights on in dash,but the reduced engine performance icon lit up once?doesnt matter if car is inside or out in the cold,it will or will not start,there is no pattern to its ailments,the other day it was running rough and it would idle way down and then stall,but would fire right back up and do the same thing all over again?.This is a car i have for sale,but i cant show it to anyone like this,i am scared to drive it anypace in case it quits and doesnt start?,it has 211,000 klms on it,never smashed,i just bought it and i dont know the history of it,it came from the auction,i am starting to figure why it was there?.is there any way to get the code numbers in the readout display,i have seen them there on other volvos i have had,i have had 7 others,and have never had anything like this before,have a small handheld scanner and it shows nothing unusual?. another thing i forgot,the cooling fan comes on when i try to start it?,even if the car has been sitting for 2 days?. Thanks

 

Cooling fan coming on with key suggests a MAF issue. MAF is located on the intake tube between the air filter and the turbo. Disconnect it and try to start. You will have a 'Check Engine' light on but the car should run fairly well. If this happens then you need to replace the MAF. Good luck.

 

disconnected the MAF,still no start,car is inside the shop,so not cold in there?,have someone with a better scanner coming over tomorrow to try and see whats wrong.really getting POd with this car. Harvey

had car on a good scan tool,it spit out about 10 codes,most were not even problems,however it is pointing to the crankshaft position sensor,going to try one tomorrow,will update if it works,got my fingers crossed,as the car is dead in my shop and we have 4 feet of snow and it is hard to push it outside. harvey

 

Well i put in a new sensor,aftermarket one,not OEM,anyhow the car did fire up and seemed to work OK,only drove 10 miles with it,shut it off and left it outside,the freakin thing wouldnt start after sitting out all nite,wasnt real cold about minus 5 celsius?,it warmed up a bit and it did start the next day,anyone have any idea whats wrong with this thing.did get a coolant sensor,going to put it in,was only 21.00 not a big deal.Car does not seem to like the cold?. Pulled the plugs,they are very dirty and smell like gas,going to try a new set tomorrow,plugs look bad enough to cause no start issue,fingers crossed.not sure if they are OEMs or have been changed are NGKs. car has 211,000 kilometers on it,should be due for a set?.Harvey
