Default camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor question

hi,

even since i got the check engine light my 2002 Volvo s60 2.4T AWD i've noticed a pretty significant increase in fuel consumption.

the check engine light turned out to be a P0014(camshaft sensor) and P0016(crankshaft sensor).

what exactly do the camshaft sensor and crankshaft sensor do?
also, how hard is it to get to them and replace?

hi there,

these sensors are pretty common problems that occur with age.

yes they are easy to replace and cost around £50-100 for crank and cam (im obviously from the uk!!) so not much more in euros.

the sensors are used by the ECU to determine the position of the crank and cam for accurate engine running, and for emissions purposes. what symptoms are you getting as they sometimes show these are bad but its caused by something else ie p0014 means the exhaust cam is over advanced or system performance bank 1 so could a VVT issue???

hope this helps

thanks for your input Steve!

i just got the car from the mechanic today after changing both sensors. costed me about 250€ with labor. the mechanic said the 2 work toghether and needed to be changed.

there were no obvious symptoms to be honest. one thing i noticed when trying to get more power from the car it would just dissapoint which it didn't usually do.

according to 2 mechanics i asked the risk was one day it would just not start or leave me stranded while driving.
now it seems lively and very responsive so it seems the problem is solved.

hopefully this will be the last i hear of it

thanks again!
