RE: First time Volvo buyer
Welcome to the forum, I wish you find it helpful & enjoyable.
As I'm not privy to the S60 series, my reply would be based on the general knowledge.
Look for one with:
- Full maintenance history.
- Low mileage.
- Overall cleanliness on both the exterior & interior, as well as the engine bay.
- Test drive, of course.
- Take it to your mechanic before paying, preferably a MasterASE Technician at independent shops specialising in Swedish/European makes.
- Expect $500 to $1,000 for initial servicing, parts alone. The number could be more or less, depending on the condition.
Make sure that the timing belt & related components (if so equipped) have been done at recommended intervals. If not done on time/in the last 5 years, it should be your top priority.
I wish you luck finding a good S60.

RE: First time Volvo buyer
JPN hassome good advice.
With this modelI havesome addtional concerns:
Be aware of the cost of ownership with this model. In example anO.E. headlight is about $750,a shock, about the same.
Because of the manual trans aprevious driver could have done a lot ofdamage to the drivetrain. Check for cracking on top of the angle gear. How does that clutch feel? Try really taking off in first gear and you'll know what I mean.
Have you driven this car?How does it feel?
In my humbleopion you should evalute the the cost of a T5 plus upgrades vs. an R. I have had the pleasure ofdriving T5's with some professional, well done upgrades, and I prefered it to the R. I didn't miss those 3 extra buttons on the dash at all.
