Reddish Oil With Varnish Smell
I just bought a 2003 S60 with 130k miles a few weeks ago, and checked the oil for this first time. Oil on dipstick looks strange to me, kind of orangish in color but otherwise is clear. Smells a bit like varnish when on the fingertips. Could this be synthetic? Or, is it just bad oil. Engine runs great, does not consume oil or antifreeze so far. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks//ch

Orange oil doesn't seem to be right... I've used a hand full of oils (both synth and non) and all have had a dark tan color when poured and almost look clear on the dipstick when fresh. Any chance the previous owner used an additive? What color is your antifreeze? You said it isn't loosing any, but you never know.
I'd change the oil and keep and eye on it.
I'd change the other fluids too, because you never know what the previous owner did (or didn't) do.
