S60 Shopping- High mileage, but good deal. Worth it?
I'm currently a Jeep owner, but I'm in the market for a car in the hopes of better gas mileage.
This evening I came across a 2004 S60 2.4 with 130,xxx miles.
It had the timing belt done a 97K and all scheduled maintenance has been regularly performed at a local Volvo dealership. There has been one owner, and it's carfax clean.
They are asking $6,988 for the vehicle, however I am sure I could talk them down below $6,000.
Assuming all of this is true, do you think the vehicle is worth it? I am an experienced mechanic in the Jeep world, but I've never dealt with a Vovlo. However, I'm certain I could learn quickly. I'm also wondering about how long these vehicles are expected to last?
I appreciate your help!!!

There are a whole lot of newer ones at about twice the asking price ($15 K asking) with a quarter of the mileage on them and complete service histories.
Have the belts, hoses, bushings, PCV, all been replaced? How is the transmission? (That's a biggie).
Bigger question....since you can guess the dealer gave the sellers about one half their current asking price, why were they selling it instead of just keep driving it until the wheels fell off?
If its absolutely beautiful, you may get another 100K from it, in which case it would be a good deal. But it is now approaching 6 years old, and if you read through these threads you'll see that older Volvos have "quirks".

I'll have to disagree with what was said above me. I currently have an 01 S60 that I have given to my mom because if i was to sell it I would get nothing out of it. It is also a 2.4 NA motor. Which I have talked to a lot of reputable Volvo Shops, namely Richards Volvo of Gainesville and Al's Volvo of Jacksonville. They both stated that they would rather have the NA because they are way more reliable. In the 8 years I've had the car I've had one problem. I had to replace a wheel bearing at about 120k. Otherwise I've performed all maintenance on the car and it runs like a top. I gave it to my mom cus its safe and dead on reliable. The car now has 180k on it and has run amazing the whole time with regular maintenance.
Malaka posed the question of why would someone not keep a car and drive the wheels off of it. Thats pretty much exactly what 99% of people don't want to do. They just want something new, so they trade it in. For example. I'm looking to trade in an 06 with about 72k on it just cus i'm tired of it. Yeah I could keep it and drive it up a million miles. But why? I just want a new car.
Anyways it sounds like a good deal. If the car has been taken care of and it is in fact an NA. I would say go for it.
