S60 T5 Hard to start and fuel Smell

RE: S60 T5 Hard to start and fuel Smell
Final Update (I hope)- After sending numerous e-mails to everyone I could think of at Volvo, I received a call from Volvo Customer service. They are going to do the right thing and reimburse me for the repairs. Only bad thing is that because of corporate red tape it'll take 8-12 weeks, but at least they're doing it.

RE: S60 T5 Hard to start and fuel Smell
I joined the forum to thank you all for saving me $800. I have a 2001 S60 and the car became hard to start and I noticed a fuel smell. My dealer reported a defective fuel pump and advised that with a filter change and tax it would cost around $900+ to repair. I told him to go ahead but I also decided to research the problem and found this forum.
I brought the information I discovered here to the dealerships attention and about an hour later they notified me that Volvo would replace the fuel pump at no charge as a customer courtesy. I paid for the filter replacement. I certainly appreciate Volvo's flexibility, but out of concern for the potential hazard and financial burden others may face, I did notify NHTSA.
Forgot to mention that I live in Florida. I guess we must have the same climate and fuel conditions as they are experiencing in Arizona and Nevada.
Thanks again! Without your assistance, I would have incurred an expensive repair.

RE: S60 T5 Hard to start and fuel Smell - FREE REPLACEMENT IN FL
Just wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to the forum and let everyone in Central Florida know our success. Our 2001 S60 exhibited the same gas odor and hesitation to start as described. The gas fumes were so bad that we had to park the car in the driveway because the fumes were seeping into the house from the garage. We took the car to The Volvo Store in Winter Park (where we purchased the car originally when it was new). Our service assistant was some cranky grump who didn't give a rats about some female walking in with a mitt full of documented complaints from the Volvo Forum. However, when all was said and done, the fuel pump was the problem and we had to practically force the man to read the information from the forum. But ten minutes later he called us back apologizing and saying that hehad spoken with his manager and that Volvo "had just issued an extended warranty" for the fuel pump and Volvo would be footing the bill.
Moral of the story - print out these posts, circle the NHTSA, and let 'em squirm. Thanks to everyone one who contributed to this post. You saved us $800 which our local dealer would have been delighted to charge us.

RE: S60 T5 Hard to start and fuel Smell - FREE REPLACEMENT IN FL
Dumb question, but..........My wife has a 2002 S60t with 53k on the car and in the last two days I have noticed the "gas smell" and researched it here on this forum.
My question is: Did Volvo recall the fuel pump? Or will I have to fork over $500 plus for the replacement? We live in Kansas City, Missouri.
Thanks for any information,
Chris

RE: S60 T5 Hard to start and fuel Smell
I want to thank all of you for posting about this fuel pump problem. I am in Calif. and have a 2001 S60 with 100k milesthat my college age son is driving at school. He reported to me hard starting and the fuel smell. I was prepared to fork over $900 to fix it when I came across this forum. I reported to my dealer that Volvo had extended the warranty and even he denied knowing about it. (And by the way your car also needs an additional $1000 worth of work). And dealers wonder how they get a bad name. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Volvo forums
