Volvo is now offering a software update for older cars that have Sensus (without the "Connect"). The following models are supported for this:

The purpose of the update? To allow you to download maps from the internet onto a USB stick, and then install the maps in your car. No need to purchase DVDs. The only thing you need to purchase is the software update (one-time fee) and possibly buy a USB stick.

There is a bit of a caveat - lots of dealers don't know about this yet, so if you go in, you may find that they don't think there is anything available. I had to go through Volvo Customer Support and get them to touch base with the dealer - my appt is on Friday (this will be the 3rd time that I have explicitly asked them for this update), and I am hoping the 3rd time is the charm.

Now Available! Navigation Update for Certain 2011-2015 Volvos

 

The dealer did the required software upgrade to my 2015 (not 15.5) V60, and they even updated the maps. I now have software version 1100 (previously 1040) and maps version V30.16.02 (previously V30.13.02) for the North American region.

The claim was that the technical journal article describing the software upgrade had them also do the 1st maps upgrade themselves. Subsequent upgrades I should be able to do myself with a USB stick.

And to top it off, they didn't charge - it was under 'warranty'.
