Sounds like a card in bicycle spokes
When I was a kid we put a playing card on our bikes that would run through the spokes. Even though I have a bad cold and fever I had to head out for a Valentines Day card. Got in the car and heading down the road. Then I heard it, a faint sound like a card running through the pokes of a bicycle.
The car was its normal self touch the pedal and it rockets off (something I've never liked). I always felt the turbo kicked in all too fast.
No CEL just the sound.
If I was so sick and if it wasn't so damn hard to check I would check the trans fluid level.
Placed it in neutral and revved the engine and no card in the spokes sound. Placed in gear and drove --- the sound appeared.
The V50 has been my daily driver and over the past 6 months the S60 is rarely driven.

Been sick so I haven't driven the car but I had some time to think. I started thinking along your line of thinking. Just because I heard the noise when in gear and moving doesn't mean trans. When revving the engine I was sitting still. Maybe I need to roll down the hill in neutral.
