So about 5 months ago I noticed this humming type of noise coming from under the hood of the car, its hard to tell if its coming from either the alternator or the power steering.

When I first start my car its at its loudest for about 3-5 seconds, then quite's down a little bit but still there for sure. When i'm driving I hear it also at lower RPMs, when driving above 40 or so I cant hear it really, but mostly in idle, or lower speeds and coasting are when its the loudest. Noise does not change when I turn my tires and I recently flushed and put in new power steering fluid and that did not help the problem at all. One mechanic said he thinks its coming from the power steering motor, but another told me its the alternator so i'm trying to find some help here before I go ahead and replace one and waste money after realizing that was not the issue, if need I can take a video of the noise if that helps. Please let me know if any other info is needed and thanks for the help!

 

My money is on the alternator. I've never had a power steering pump make noise that wasn't fluid related (low or aerated). I've seen many P2 alternators make noise.

 

yeah ill probably just get the alternator replaced, I do know power steering motors do make noises but I feel if its been there for 4 mores and no leaking in my power steering it cant be the power steering motor

 

There is also a belt tension pulley in that same area, I have replaced a few of those. Once you take the belt of you can turn the pulleys by hand and also see if any of the bearing wiggle, its much easier to tell what pulley it is if you pull the belt off and check them that way.
