Default Arrow light comes on then car starts to stall

Volvo v70 trans up arrow light comes on then a few seconds later it starts to stall. I can put it in neutral and rev the engine and sometimes it wont die. Also a dash light that says 18 comes on when this is happening. It's a "Winter" mode light that is a setting you can put the car in for slippery roads. If it stalls it usually starts right back up again, but a few times it wouldn't start right away. Any ideas? Is this maybe a transmission sensor gone bad? It's a 1999 V70 with automatic transmission.

could be tied to a sensor or the ABS controller. If you can have the OBD2 codes read that may give a clue, also a suggested first step is to read up on the ABS control module failure symptoms which is common to these cars and see if those line up with what you are experiencing.

There are no codes, I checked. I'm wondering what the winter mode light and the transmission up arrow have to do with the ABS system? I'll read up on it, thanks.

The wheel speed sensors feed the ABS module which is connected to the transmission's computer. The transmission has a set of solenoid valves which are controlled by the computer to set up shift patterns etc in conjunction with road speed and other sensor inputs. A typical problem is the ABS module develops "cold solder joints" - cracks in the circuitry that can lead to erroneous signals to the computer - which sets off the warning lights.
