Do I need a new temp sensor or just a thermostat?

Do I need a new temp sensor or just a thermostat?
A few weeks ago I got the P0116 trouble code "Engine Coolant Temp. circuit range/performance problem". What I then found out is that my coolant was bad so I drained it and put some new coolant in, no problem. Now its a few weeks later and I'm getting the same code. What should I do? I heard that just replacing the thermostat would be good.
Also, if I need any parts should I get them from VOLVO or a place like NAPA?
This doesn't effect my readiness for the 02 Sensor's does it? Because I'm not readying up to pass DEQ yet.
Thanks for your help!

RE: Do I need a new temp sensor or just a thermostat?
Hopefully it is good to just use this thread to continue the topic. I had the same code come up yesterday on my 98 s70 t5se. Came out of the movies, started and warmed up for maybe 2 minutes(about 50F), then just regular driving onto the freeway, pop goes the CEL.
Just wondering if perhaps I didn't let the engine warm up enough, or something to that affect. I had driven the car about 80 miles earlier that day, with no light coming on.
I suppose my question would be, do I try and get the code cleared and see if it comes up again, or is there a way to test the sensor to see if it IS actually bad?
Thanks

RE: Do I need a new temp sensor or just a thermostat?
When these cars are started cold, the engine module expects to see the engine temperature rise to a given temperature in a given amount of time. When this doesn't happen, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for the Coolant temp sensor (ECT) sensor is set.
The thermostat often is bad and isn't completely closing when the engine temp is cold, so the engine tekes longer than normal to warm up, setting the DTC.
I tend to just replace the thermostat and flush the coolant while I'm in there.

I managed to change my thermostat, temp sensor, and coolant flush fairly easily with all the helpfull information you guys give.
I only say "fairly" easy, because of course, the first time you try repairs on a car that's new to you, everything will go wrong. It was after work and starting to lose daylight, so of course the torx bit fell into an unreachable part of the engine bay, couldn't find a decent working flashlight or magnet, broke the other torx bit in half.
But eventually it was all done, no more CEL, and next time should be a piece of cake. Thanks again for your helpfull advice!!

Through a site many recommend on here. fcpgroton.com
they have good prices and decent shipping if you buy all the parts you'll need anytime soon.
or browse through some posts, a couple other good sites are around. the dealer is always overpriced!
