door panel repair

All four of mine are pulling away but otherwise in good shape(so the vinyl must be decent quality to put up with 13 years of Texas sun) - I think it is the adhesive at fault on these. They used some sort of green eco-friendly glop that hasn't faired well with the test of time. Would like to hear of someone actually getting them upholstered in leather myself.

All that I have heard have replaced the panels. I have seen some of the R panels and they look great. I think the real problem is that they vinyl starts to shrink and pulls away from the glued backing. It would have to be heat streatched to be glued on that backing, almost impossible for someone to do themselves. The 850 panels are great, maybe the T-5 and R S70 panels are very simular.

Glue works fine
My S40 door upholstry started to peel off, and I found this thread as a result. It's some sort of fabric, not leather like most others commenting here. The old glue is orange and foamy, forming a layer a millimeter or so thick. I scraped off as much of the old glue as I could, especially around the edges and overhangs where I thought adhesion would be most critical. Then I applied some shoe glue (figuring that since it's really sticky and forms a tough bond it would work well here). That was a couple of weeks ago and it's still looking good. Hope this helps someone. Cheers

Hey Outstanding Bill! Sounds like a great job! To be able to reach any satisfying results with glue it is utmost important your panels are NOT upholstered with foam underneath the vinyl that is coming off. In the Classic series (V70, S70) glueing is NOT an option because you will damage the foam underneath the vinyl: it will end up looking all bumpy, and no Panelpads can solve that problem. In other words the type of glue is not the issue, it is the foam layer that causes the trouble when you start repairing with glue. If your panels are upholstered with foam underlayment indeed then I am very curious how you managed.... Please share!
