Gas Fumes 98 S70 w/ 110K miles
New to the group today and wondering if anyone has advice on diagnosing a gas odor on a '98 S70 w/ 110K miles. The odor is primarily outside of the car, noticeable when the car is parked in a garage overnight and seems to be related when the tank is full. If I fill the tank to about 3 gallons under max, I don't seem to have the problem or at least it is greatly reduced. Also seems to be more of an issue in warmer weather although I am not absolutely sure of this. The obvious thing to check seems to be the joint where the filler tube joins the tank but are there any other issues. I've never serviced the carbon cannister or checked any of the vent lines coming from the fuel tank. Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Welcome to the club.
I just checked the recalls on '98 S70 and did not see any recall for the fuel system.Certain 850 models (very similar to S70)have fuel tank recalls but didn't see it on the S70.
The charcoal canister is probably fine, unless you see physical damage to it, and there is probably a leak at/around the filler neck area; there are some small rubber hoses that may have failed.
The odor is more noticeable in warmer climate, as gasoline vaporises faster as the ambient temp goes up. I wonder if the problem is common on the S70s; if so, you may be able to talk with the dealer to see if they can fix it free of charge (referred to as "secret warranty").
Wait till other S70 owners jump in; I'm an 850 driver and am not privy to the S70s.

There is a couple of common problems.
1.The vent hose if your car has one might be cracked and leaking some fuel.
2.The sealer that seals where the wires come though the plastic for the fuel pump might have fallen apart and gas might be seaping up through the wires.
3. One of the vent system hoses might be cracked.
