Default New Member with Catalytic Converter Questions

Hey guys,

I'm new here. I'm a graduate student at NC State (GO PACK!!) and a 1998 S70 owner living in Raleigh, NC.

Having an issue that I'd like some help with. I'm having issues getting the engine to even turn over. Maybe once out of every 10 tries it will turn over, but idles down to a stop.

This started a few days ago, so I immediately changed spark plugs and distributor cap (thanks Robert DIY Youtube videos) and no difference. Then I changed out the fuel filter and no help. The fuel pump is working, I can hear it prime when I turn the key to accessory position.

So this morning it started right up (surprisingly) but it idled quit at a stop sign about a mile from my apt. Called AAA towing and the tow guy asked me if I had checked the catalytic converter. So we tried cranking it and I this time I heard the converter this time making that rocks in a can noise. At this point I think the issue is that my catalytic converter is thrashed.

I looked into some stuff about taking it off and putting on a straight pipe, but it would be too loud and I honestly don't want to do that. I'm an adult my 30s, not a teenager. I can't seem to find the part listed at any junkyard around and I read that you can't sell them used? What the hell? Is there any way to get a used one?

Glad to be here and Looking for some advice. Thanks!
