Default Oil leak / dip stick issue??

Well my dip stick is very loose and when i'm driving it comes loose and pulls up a bit, so until i get a new one or a new o-ring i have it held down by some tape which is working good..

My question is when it does pull up, oil sprays up all over my engine compartment, just wonder if there should be that much pressure to squirt oil out when i'm driving my car.. or is that normal and all i need is a new dip stick?

Thanks in advance!!

When was the last time either of you fellas serviced your PCV system? Your mutual dipstick issues typically indicate that it's time to do so...

PCV problem. It is likely plugged up and it's popping the oil dipstick instead of blowing other seals like your rear main seal or your cam seals. You guys need to get that fixed ASAP and DO NOT keep the oil dip stick in by forced in by some other means.

I think the PCV system replacement is second to the timing belt. :/

Yeah, what rspi said explains my concerns a little better.

Never been too good at being detailed, sorry.

The oil dip stick popping out is usually the LAST WARNING before you get into major trouble.

The PCV system is something that should be serviced every 60,000 miles. It is usually neglected until you find out the hard way or someone warns you through another problem. You can search the site and read 1,000 post about it.

The 850 section has most of the S70 repair items, get use to checking the 850 side of the site. Here is a link to the 850 common problems: Helpful Information - "How To" DIY Repairs This is a sticky in the 850 section. Items 17 and 32 should help you a lot.

The main cause of oil leaks with these cars are the lack of service to the PCV system. You can tell if your system needs service by pulling the oil dip stick 1/2 way out when the car is running and warm. Smoke will come out of the dip stick tube.

As for it being loose, one bolt holds it in. Tighten that bolt and it will be secure. The other end is held in by the end of the tube with a seal.

I thought you were saying that your entire dip stick tube was loose. If it's just the stick you can replace the seal on the handle that sticks in the tube to get that more firm when it's pushed into the tube.

That's right. No oil should be coming out of there or popping up the stick.

K i'm going to plan on attempting to do this soon!

ipd has it for $238
http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S70V70-P...-364-861-4159/

while fcpgroton has it for $98
http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exe...281999-2000%29

seems ipd has an extra hose that comes along, will the kit on FCP be ok?

also, what is the part of the system that goes bad?

thank you!!

Ouch! That one tube has metal tubing and stuff that my cars do not have. I would go with the complete kit. One of those hoses may be clogged and at the age it has the rubber is likely in need of replacement.

Do the entire kit every other replacement. The say service it every 60,000 miles. Not sure what "service" means but I replaced the system on both my cars. You may not have the car that long.

Try to make sure the holes going into the motor block are clear when you do it.

You may not have the car that long because most people don't purchase a 12 year old car and keep it longer than 4 years. So, if you do the work on it today the chances of you having the car for longer than 4 years is very slim. Most people keep newer cars 5 years, that's why to make loans for an average of 5 years. Just the law of average when it comes to cars. Yes I kept a 740 GLE for about 17 years but I'm pretty weird. The car was new when I purchased it. Other than that, I can't remember keeping a car for longer than 7 years and that was a new car. So, if you replace the PCV system and keep the car 5 or 6 years, it will likely not need to be replaced.

As for the dip stick test, that is the best test that I know of but we may have another issue there... Do you have a turbo or NA? If you have a NA, you may have a flame trap. If you have a flame trap, that may be your only issue. A flame trap needs to be cleaned or replaced every 5,000 miles I think but I'm not sure with the NA cars. On my 740, that was a $3.50 part from the steeler.

Well i have had the car for 1 year, 135 on the clock now, and no loan on it.. so i would like to keep it as long as i can..
called a volvo guy in the area and he said $300-350 to replace the "oil trap" what i think he was talking about, said that is most likely the issue from it being backed up.. about 2-3 hrs of work.

I'm going to try to do it myself and replace all the tubing in the process, just i've never messed with the manifold, is it very difficult to take off and put back on?

OK, I see you have the T5 (photo) so you should have the oil trap box and all. The big thing with taking off the manifold is having the tools to reach all the bolts. Kinda tricky not to drop them a loose them in the motor are somewhere. When you get the manifold off, you can see the valves and should be able to tell if you have carbon build up. If so, you may want to run Lucas in the gas tank every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. And stop using 87 octane if you're doing that.

I don't know of anything else that needs to be replaced other than the oil cap gasket. If parts are over $200 and they will do the job for $300 I would probably let them do it. LOL Unless you don't think they will do the job right.
