found these instructions:
1. Press and hold odometer reset button.2. Turn ignition switch to Run.3. After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button.4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again.
but cant get it to work for me. does anyone have any advice. perhaps more detail as to when to release the odometer?

i have a 98' v70 with the service light on. nothing seems to turn this thing off except for running for about 2 min. what is "the tool"?

Kenny, your kidding right??? I know it's been said about 10 times in this thread, you can NOT reset the Service light on these cars without a special tool, NOT an OBD-II reader.

Once you are done doing this, take your comm logs (whoops - forgot to mention that earlier) and whatever programming software you use to communicate with your OBD2 unit, and you should be able to whip up a VB or C++ program to duplicate what you just saw.
I'm going to admit here that I have not tried this. This is just a core set of tasks that assumes that you have a certain level of computer proficiency.
It also assumes that your OBD2 reader is just an adapter for a program in your computer, and not one of these "all in one" units that isn't programmable - I didn't give eprom burning instructions here, since they are different for each reader.

This is rather difficult. If you can find the communications specifications, you will need to program your OBD2 reader to write the proper code to do the reset. If you do not have the comms spec, you will need to find a way to monitor the pin on the OBD2 port that the command is being sent through, and if it is OBD2, you can put an OBD2 "sniffer" parallel to your reader. It would be good if this was bidirectional, so you could check the responses (I think it may be, since I hear that the time varies for how long it takes to reset).

I have a Scan Gauge II and I know there is a way to program it to turn the freeking service light off but I have not figured it out. It's sad that ScanGauge has not done it, I'm sure Volvo's are not the only car that needs the light turned off.
I have seen a tool on eBay for about $79. It was out of Europe or China so I didn't bother getting it. I may check with the Volvo salvage yard that is closing down to see if he'll let go of his.
