Hello..

I need some advice please. A few days agoI had pulled out of a drivewayand begandriving down the road, the transmission slipped and made a weird noise (like a pop then afirework shooting up into the skywhine/whistle).About 1 minutelater the Trans service urgent and check engine lights came on. I pulled over and checked the fluid... aauugghhit's over full, which I have no idea how that happened since the last time I checked it, it was fine and nothing was added (approx 2 mo's ago).

Anyway.. I was approx 7 miles from home when this happened, I turned around and on the way home the tranny started slipping. It was slow to pull from the stop signs and was slippingwhen accelerating up hills.

I already found a used trans for $650.. My questions are... could it possibly be a relayor something like that, or does this sound like the transmission itself?Would draining and refilling the fluid/filter possibly help?Oh yea.. this carhas 204000 miles on it and drove like a dream until this happened.
With an older car I'd know for sureit's the trans.BUT now-a-dayswith all the electronics running everything I thought i'd ask before replacing it.

Not everyone goes on all the sections on this forum.
I try to cover all of them. But if I have to walk away from the computer for a little while all the new posts get lost. Then I miss some.
You should have asked again if someone knew before going to a comment like that above.

Here's what I found out today, #1 I rechecked the fluid today and it was normal... weird!
The codes are "P0751 Shift Solenoid A, Performance or Stuck Off" and "P1618 Manufacturer Specific Code"whichI was told"Input/output" but it doesn't refer to "what" input/output.
I'm assuming these codes are related? Do you know?

I canreplace the solenoid, and hope that does the trick orI can have a used trans with approx 80kput in (I believe I'm to stay away from the 03 and 04 tranny's?)or have this one rebuilt.
Any and all of your help/advice is greatly appreciated!

Did they clear the codes?
If so did they come right back?

Some of the soleniods do go bad.
If you can wait a day I will try to cross refrence the tranny codes tomorrow at work over to Volvo codes so I can give you better information.

Some have had good luck replacing the soleniod. Others haven't.

But have they quoted you for the soleniod replacement?
That is pretty labor intensive.
You might want to think about replacing it if the cost is pretty close.
With 204,000 miles you are (Hate to say this) one of the lucky ones.

In 1999 and 2000 model year cars I have seen them getting delivered to the Dealer with 4 miles on them and a bad tranny.

The 2003 and 2004 tranny's are usually better.

 

Yes the codes were cleared and came back onright(didn't re-check the codes again)

The "tranny guy"(friend of a friend) made it sound "semi-simple", dropping the pan and replacing... hmmm maybe he said dropping the tranny.?
Hesaida newsolenoid should cost approx$50 to $70 and to get a filter and gasket also. Hesaid I coulduse a used solenoid if I can find one.
He'd be doing this "on the side" so I'd probably be paying somewhere around $100 for labor.
I believe he said there are 3 solenoids in this tranny and replacing them all would be a good idea since one was already being replaced. What is your thoughts and opinion?

So it's the 99 and 00 tranny's that I should stay away from if I go with the replacement?

I am having a hard time cross refrenceing the codes.
I am still working on it through.
At work I use one that gives te codes in Volvo codes then I have the program to follow Volvo's info.

I would replace all 3 if he is going in there.

I will try to get the info ASAP for you.

Still having trouble can't find the crossover for the P0751 but the other code 1618 means that there is a code in the tranny which you already know.
The guy you know does he know GM tranny's?
The S80 tranny is a Caddy transmission. A GM tech should know more about the tranny.
Also you should be able to buy parts from them as well. It might be cheaper.
I will still keep searching.

This guy works in a salvage yard pulling, rebuildingand repairing all makes oftrannys. HeknowsGM well,he told me it's an AW5042LE Cadillac trans... I won't repeat what he said about Cadillac trannys. Of course they don't have this trans in their yard.

Also... do you know.. "Is the 1618 telling me that the tranny has the 0751 code" oris it telling methe TCM should be replaced also? Hope I'm not asking stupid questions!

I miss my baby... I've been stuck driving a crappy, hoopdieJetta since she's been ill.
As of monday my daughter will needthe VWto get back and forth towork. I'll have to start driving my 85 Vette.. which with gas pricesisn't going to be fun.

I'll startlooking into getting the parts through GM and/or ebay.
If you have any other info that would help me, I'd greatly appreciate it, otherwise I will let you know how it all turns out.

The 1618 is a code from the engine control module telling you there is a code in the TCM.

 

So much to learn about these cars. I brought a 99 S80 last month & got scared from all the stuff i read here & now i have a check engine light with the stability traction control light & ABS & also Transmission message. had a friend of a friend who is suppose to be really good here in Brooklyn NYC check & he says it's the ABS vehicle speed sensor I have an exrended warranty which supposedly covers that part but i wonder will i still have those messages oh yeah the dealer had the brakes done & thats when the ABS light came on. You guys prob have a section with this info but Im not so savy with the forum although I'm in the Ford forum yuk cause of the Taurus i owned & My hobbie the Mazda RX7 forums love my rotarie engines, off track but trying to learn about Volvo here I really love the car & want to continue to enjoy this car until I clear my credit & can invest in the 2008 S80

 

Hey tech how are the 2001 transmissions? Mine has 103,00 and shifts great( knock on wood) did they get some of the problems worked out of them? 2001 2.9 non turbo

I know its an old thread but I have just purchased a 1999 s80 that when driven in "D" will bring up the same codes (P1618 & P0751) however if driven in "3" the drives perfectly just without 4th gear.
Did you end up solving the problem by chaging the solenoids or did you replace the trans?
