RE: cam timing to gears
You should have lined the mark up before removing the belt first and marked.
Then you should have removed the belt and turned the pulley foward and marked it.
Then you should have turned it back and marked it.
The pulley has to be set in a certain position. Some need to be loaded and others just need to be set in a certain position. It all depends on which Cam the VVT pulley is on.
If needs be I can try to post the Volvo precidure so you can try it.

RE: cam timing to gears
I will have to check for sure. I forget it the Exhaust is the spring loaded one or the one that moves free.
I think it is the spring loaded if it is then no it needs to be turned almost all the way foward. It should stop like 1/16 of an inch after the timing mark. Then when you install the belt the mark lines up.

when l first put the timing belt on,befor l got the cam tool,l turned it over by hand 2-3 turns,no resistant like it would if it were hitting the valves, could it have tweak a valve?l will get it scanned today an see what it says, somtimes it smoothes out and than starts a loping spell, put you in mind like somthing still out of time, does the vvt play a role in the timing like that?
