I have a similar problem in my 05 S80. It sounds like a pop though. The only time I hear it is when making turns into parking lots or driveways. The test mentioned earlier about the strut nut. I am assuming that it should not turn at all or not easily?

Also How do you tell if you have the auto dimming mirrors. My rear view has what look like the holes above the glass that would be the sensors. I was wondering if there might be a fuse that controls them because my driver side mirror defrost is not working either. I am assuming the defrost option is standard on the S80?

Yes the nut should not spin if you try to spin it it should feel rubbery and bounce back.

I believe they all have auto dim mirrors and defrost mirrors.
Not sure if there is a fuse though. Maybe check the back of the mirror glass and make sure the wires are connected to the glass.

Thanks for the good advice Tech. I had the sway bar links replaced yesterday, and the problem improved but did not disappear. Could that happen? What do you think I should check out next?

Yes. That was the first thing I checked, per you. Springy not spinny.

Very possible. Any way to test for that?

Not really a good test but to remove it and move it up and down and feel for play.

Picked up a 01 S80 T6 last week and just confirmed the passenger side strut needs attention as its making the clunking noise over bumps. The nut on the passenger side spins while the driver side is springy.

Just to confirm, replace passenger side spring seat correct? Please advise? Thanks

yes, most likely cause is the spring seat. Its a rubber part with a metal sleeve insert which can separate from the rubber. See the pick below of a failed spring seat next to a good one (photo courtesy of my daughter's 850T) - Car has identical symptoms - thumping over bumps etc.

Default Clunk in front right when engine / brakes cold volvo s80 2008

Really hoping someone can help. I have a 'rasping' sound which is in the front right wheel area when I start the car, reverse, and decelerate. After about 10 minutes driving it disappears. Took it to Pedders the suspension people who couldn't find anything but thought it may be the Power Brakes booster (?). Took it to another mechanic who said that it may be non-standard brake shoes (replaced about 9 months ago). Much appreciate any thoughts / suggestions....
(Serviced by Volvo since new - last service only 3000km ago!!)

sometimes the brake back playe scrapes on the back of the rotor. ( i would check the first). Other rasping noise i had with my s80 was the timing belt cover. It woukd sometimes scrape against the pulleys then sound woukd go away after about 10 minutes.
