Default Noob attempting cylinder head removal...

OK, so..I am a certified noob-however, I have a buddy who is fairly experienced doing similar stuff with other imports (Audi, Toyota, BMW) who has agreed to help me with this project (i.e., he will be doing most of the work).

Basically, I have burnt valve and have been told by the local stealership that this will only cost ~3500. So, we are going to try to at least pull the head and let another reputable local shop (with Volvo experience) do the actual head work (replace the valves, etc.). We basically just need to pull the head and reinstall after said head work is complete. My buddy has asked me to ask you guys if you can give us some real world know-how-particularly with regards to any major "gotcha's" and/or other advice you can provide that is not available in the VAIDS (we do have this loaded up on my PC).

One thing we noticed in the VAIDS-there are a few special tools listed that appear to be unnecessary (i.e., gasket applying paint roller looking tool, etc.). Any advice you guys can provide as to what is required vs. what is nice to have would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks for your input!
