Default S80 Misfire w/ flickering interior lights

Hi All, I recently purchased a 2001 S80 for my mother as a get around car but im having a weird problem as I am getting the car ready for her. So heres my story. The car was purchased damaged (blew a rod, that came through the crank case.) That being said a buddy of mine located an engine with low miles and I purchased it and had a (non-volvo speacialist) shop install it for me. After it was installed it took some finese but they got it started and took it for a drive. Once it came back it had a pretty bad mis fire.

The car sat in their shop for a week with no idea of what the problem was so I got pissed and had the car brought to my house. The codes indicated a misfire and so I targeted the coilpacks as the possible problem. I purchased 1 new coil pack and obtained 4 used coil packs for testing. Before I go any further I forgot to mention that when the car was started it would shake, as it was mis firing but I noticed that the interior lights would dim or flicker at the same rate of the misfire. I found that weird, so what I did was one by one I disconnected the connector the coil packs to hear the difference in the engine response starting from the cam gear side working to the rights. Not sure of the cylinder numbering but I found that there was no difference when I disconnected the 2nd and 3rd coil packs from the far right side of the engine. I replaced those 2 coil packs but the symptons were the same.

Now taking all that into consideration is it possible that the lead wires for those 2 coil packs could be shorting out someplace else? I tried moving the wire harness around to see if I heard a change in the engine tone but noda..... Im sorry for the long drawn out description but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. FYI I installed new Bosch plat. plugs at the same time.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

As an update.....

took off the upper intake manifold to make sure all injector connectors were properly seated. and once replaced I started but same annoying miss firing. I also felt the 2 injectors and feel them pulsing so they appear to be functioning. Can someone tell me if there is a way to confirm or test that the connector for the coil packs are passing current?

Ive just been trying to think what could have happened within these few days that could have resulted in this misfire. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

unfortunately the cleaning of the MAF sensor had no affect on the misfire condition. In addition to that; targeting the # 4 & 5 cylinders, I tested the coil packs by disconnecting them from spark plug inserted into the cylinder and inserted 2 of the old plugs that I removed earlier. I then started the car which still had the same mis fire condition and noted that both spark plugs were arcing to the head, which would indicate that the coil packs are functioning and the spark plugs are most likely firing.

Shifting gears I now started looking at the injectors as being suspect. I took the fuel rail off and they did look kinda crudy and my friend stopped by with a used set he picked up from a junk yard. I just finished installing the 2 replacements into 4 & 5 but unfortunately the symptoms are still there.

Is it possible that when they installed this engine (which only has 59k miles on it) that they could have screwed with something that may have affected the firing order of the cylinders or something to that effect?

i have a 99 s80 t6 , it is getting fuel and fire to 4 56 cylinders but no combustion????? thanks

I just picked up a 99 that has been sitting for the better part of the past year and it has the same exact symptoms.

Mine also has a dead battery, it will run as long as I ask it to with the assitance of a jump start but as soon as I turn the key off it is as dead as a doornail.

DDBrown, did you figure out what was causing your problem?

Default not solved, but

a mechanic told me over the phone ,without looking at it,,, probally jumped time mabey one tooth on the timing belt??? taking it to the shop today will let you know the verdict,, i would try a new battery first you have to get one anyway...

The car is at the dealer right now getting a shattered moon roof replaced, I will be asking them to look at this issue while it is there. I was hoping DDBrown was still around because my symptoms are identical to his and he seemed fairly motivated to resolve it.

Default Wow... what a journey

Sorry for dissapearing for so long but like you said i am driven (no pun intended) to get this damn car driving for my mom. After jumping around from Shop to shop I finally brought the car to the dealership and ask then to diagnose the "no power and rough idle" issue. well, $1k later they did the following.

replaced 5 coil packs (they said I NEEDED to in order to qualify for the free Volvo reprogramming and other stuff)

cooling fan

and the ETM. which they said was covered under some warranty or something.

Well after all of that I went there yesterday to pick up the car and I started it up and it sounded great. Pressed the pedal a cpl times and the engine reved up perfectly so I was happy as a pig in _____. Well I put the car in drive and pulled out of the parking spot at the dealership and tapped the throttle once again and the car responded so I was convinced that the problem was resolved. WELLLL.... after driving less than 20 yards; as I was about to pull out of the dealership, AT THE STOP SIGN. the car felt exactly as it did when i brought it in. They are now speculating that its the o2 sensors that are the reason for it not being able to build power. I am going up there soon and will report back what they say now.

Very interesting, i am finally getting my s80 back from the dealership after a long ordeal over another issue and will begin my attack on this problem. I have been planning on replacing the battery and voltage regulator right off the bat, perhaps I will consider o2 sensors as well.

Update:
New battery solved my flickering problem. I pulled the CEL codes, I am getting:
P0134 - O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0306 - Misfire cylinder 6.

A couple questions, what is bank 1 sensor 1? I am guessing it is the O2 sensor in the front? Secondly, what is the order of cylinders from left to right?

Car was sitting for about a year, so I have already changed oil and spark plugs (Bosch Platinum 2). I dumped some fuel injector cleaner and dry gas in the tank because the tank is half full and presumed to be a year old. Car is being registered tomorrow morning at which point I will drive until the tank is empty and fill with 93 octane.

I have read that others have seen P0134 from bad gas, my fingers are crossed that it will run better on fresh fuel, if not I will be swapping O2 sensor. For misfire I plan on switching coil packs once I figure out which one is number 6, clearing code and waiting to see if it comes back on the same cylinder or not.

Can you tell me if You ever fixed the problem ?? I have the same problems.

Did you ever get this fixed ? I have the exact same problem and would love to know what they did to solve it. I dropped my car to the dealer and they said they needed to take the engine out after I installed a used one with 57k miles. I say no ****ing way, give me my car.

Definitely sounds like an electronic throttle issue but it could also be plugged up cats but usually a coil will trigger a specific cylinder misfire... same with an injector.... it could also be an air leak from somewhere in the intake

Default Very similar

Running fine, then after a quick errand and restarted the 2004 S80, the idle was low and choppy (seemed like misfire or dead spark plug).
The AutoZone diagnostic code P0758 indicated a fault in the Shift Solenoid "B" Electrical.

Acting similar to original post with the flickering interior lights. The car actually seems to be shifting fine, but Google searches brought me here.

Any advice?

Im having rhe same exact problem witha V70 Bifuel. It started agter an engine leakage repair.
