Default S80 T6 waterpump close call

Picked up a 2001 S80 T6 with 200,000km the other day for $4000AUD
As soon as I got it back home it started leaking coolant at decent rate.
Seller thought it was the radiator cap, turned out to be a completely munted waterpump.

Have a look at the video and see what a pump that has done 200,000km looks like.

I'm not a fan of replacing waterpumps at 100,000km when doing a timing belt however, if you catch a pump at its half life you are much less likely of blowing a pump whilst driving which could cost you more.

The belt was finger loose on the sprockets, yet the car was still driving well and giving good power. A few more kilometers and it would have snapped the belt and blown the engine.

The belt was so cracked and worn that I managed to tear it in half by pulling with only minimal tension.

Had to jack the side of the engine up to clear the waterpump out it was a bit of a rubik's cube to get it out.

Will be fitting a brand new idler even though its still fine.

The tensioner was completely seized and was near blowing up.

Oh, that bearing is really shot, indeed it seems a little too much wear for only 200k km.

Hello,

How's the rest of the car maintenance wise?

A lotto ticket might be in order given how knackered the water pump is!

I have a 2000 T6 with 190k kms on it and the water pump was weeping from the core plug, the bearing was worn but not as bad as yours...

At least mine had had the timing belt/tensioners done!

Cheers,

Chris

PS which part of the country are you in if you don't mind me asking? I'm Perth..

The rest of the car is a bit average, the owners did have it for about 70,000km but they only ever did oil changes.

The plugs came out fairly disgusting, replaced those.
The dipstick was broken, replaced that.

Brakes were done and work well, brake booster was apparently done too.
Not sure about the ABS module.

Now the car is driving fine, but has an oil leak from the driver side near the crank pulley, I think its an oil return line or something like that.
Possibly PCV, already ordered a new one.

The car has a nasty knock going over bumps so I've ordered new spring seats and control arms.

I'm in Adelaide, SA

Hi,

I have a 2000 T6 that recently spat the bearings out of the idler bearing with only 108,000 klm.

When the timing belt is off change everything you can while the opportunity is there. Don't skimp on the quality of the products either.

You will curse yourself if you need to do the thermostat and sender 12 months down the track. (If the 2001 model is still behind the t/belt)

I'm in Sydney. Ive had two of these and love them when they are going, but will be the first to stand up and say I have greatly increased the number of swear words in my vocabulary and bandaids than when I owned my 240's
