Hey everyone. Here's the deal. Ocasionally when I'm driving my 1999 S80, and I make a relatively sharp turn and turn the wheels too much, it makes a whining kinda noise, and stops as soon as I ease on the wheel a little. I noticed that sometimes, but more recently, during normal driving it would make the same kind of whining noise. So I drove home nice and slow and got in my driveway to do some testing.

When the car was parked and I turned the wheel left and right, it made the same kind of whining noise. I left it sit for a few minutes, and magically, moving the wheels no longer made the noise. So I tried reving the engine a little bit, and the noise started to sound like it was comming from the engine. So I popped the hood and tired to follow the noise, and I think I may have discovered that the problem is a plasitc casing, located perpendicular to the power steering fluid reservoir. It looks as if the two halves closest to the front of the car is in place and clicked in, but the back half of the passenger side is not clicked in and kind of hanging down a little, which leads me to belive that the wheels/gears and belts in there are rubbing agasint it. The only way I can find to disassemble the box is by undoing the right side, which is attached to the entire top black plastic part of the engine and a lot of screws. Also, I cannot seem to pull the lower hanging side of the box up, seems that other parts fit in place.

Anyone have any idea what im trying to say? or should I not waste my breath... er finger power.

 

The fluid bottle might be bad.
