Default How to program the remote transmitter for the 1998 Volvo S90

Hey gang, I have a question, I have bought another remote transmitter for my 1998 Volvo S90 because my old one was beat up & worn out. Also the piece to hook it around the key ring broke off so it was a pain just to carry it around by itself. I tried following the instructions that was sent to me when I bought the remote transmitter, but I am have issues locating the object in my car that is located on the pic I have posted numbered 21999. I have included two pictures which actually was one whole page so that you can see what the object is and maybe someone could tell me where it is located?. I would appreciate any help that you may be able to share with me. Thanks!

The pictures attached have nothing to do with programming the car door remote to the car. You should follow the following procedure to program the remote:

1. Turn the key in the ignition from off to run 5 times quickly, within 10 seconds, do not start the car, after the 5th time, leave the key in the run position.
2. The light in the dash should light up.
3. Within 10 seconds, push one of the buttons on the remote. The action should happen/react.
4. If you have additional remotes, push a button on them within 10 seconds.
5. After all remotes have been programmed (4 max), turn the key off.
6. Test the remotes.

Thanks for replying. I have tried that method several times but to no avail, that does not work. The pics I posted were the instructions that came along with the remote. I know if I took it to a Volvo dealership they would charge me a arm, leg, thy & breast!

The alarm relay may be bad.

You have to make sure all the doors, hood, trunk, and/or tailgate are closed first. Other than that, best of luck. We've gone through a couple of remotes over the years and have always been successful getting them to work.

Hey everybody, a bit new here, but glad to see this thread.

I bought my '98 S90 with only one key (needs refurbishing, but starts the car) and no remotes, but I can see the sensors for the alarm, so I know it should have keyless entry etc. The alarm system was also apparently deactivated.

In my hunt for replacement remotes, I've come across a number of Volvo OEM remotes that claim to fit the S90. Some being the standard two-button remote that the owner's manual shows, and some having about 4 buttons, namely lock, unlock, trunk and panic. I'm rather interested in the 4-button models since they're much cheaper than the 2-button ones and come in better condition (used 2-button remotes go for about $65+ each and look rather worn, and new ones show up for over $100).

My main concern is compatibility. Would the 4-button remotes work on the S90, as in all 4 buttons do the job they're each programmed to do, and would they program using the same method that the owner's manual and rspi outlined? I just don't want to buy the wrong thing and waste time and money. Thanks.

I doubt the four button remote will work, since the primitive (relative to recent) electronics on the S90 were not set up that way. That said, the unlock and lock buttons might work in the same way as the original remotes. The two button remotes unlock the trunk at the second button push, just like hitting the unlock button on the dash. Holding the lock button down gets to the panic mode, which just activates the car alarm sound.
