Drive Shaft Repair?
Hello:
I have a 1998 V70 that needs a new drive shaft. I found a company that rebuilds them. They said I can remove the drive shaft and it will convert the AWD into a front wheel drive vehicle while it is being rebuilt. They would then send it back and I would have it re installed. Is this correct and can the car be driven without the drive shat?
Thanks:
Rich

Here is the link to the company that rebuilds the drive shaft. I think their prices are pretty reasonable and the man on the phone was very helpful.

so i googled and found this link in the forum thread--checked it out with my mechanic, called them--very friendly and helpful. Paying approx. 700.00 (saving as many of you know) 500-700 bucks on the dealer price. Had it shipped to my mechanic to replace. Will post update after it has been installed-- thanks for the mention in the post--

drive shaft
My car had been making a noise everytime I turned it and was finally diagnosed as the drive shaft, and when it was taken out it had 2 problems, the first was the rubber piece that bolted it in place had not bolts! and the piece that held the two parts of the drive shaft together was shot. The volvo place said it was 971 for the part, as they only replace the entire thing. But they referred us to this place in Florida, and the two parts necessary to fix it were only 60 dollars. It's amazing because the people who rebuilt these things only have to order the new part themselves, put it in and then charge a fortune.
The Volvo parts manager was awesome in giving us this place. Waiting for the parts to arrive.

UPDATE on rebuilt drive shaft- (2000 xc 70 awd)
PART REPLACED in Jan 2011
Just a quick follow up to say the rebuilt part worked great and is still holding up fine - saved quite a bit of money. I think maybe the trick also is to get a mechanic you have worked with before that knows you won't take them to task if the part is flawed-
Well beyond my skill level to replace- but price and part and company all check out great from my experience-

I had similar problems with mine and yes! its a common problem. After trying a few different things I decided to just replace the whole drive shaft and after searching all over the place for the best price with out sacrificing quality!!! I ordered mine from www.wholesaleimportparts.com . I got the best price i could find and It was in stock. It only took a few days to get it in my hands and the shipping was free! which always helps when making these kind of purchases. I am very relieved to say that after this "expierience" with drive shafts the vibration and shaking I was feeling is completely gone .
