Hi I have a 2000 V70XC Wagon, I've been having some starting issues lately, sometimes it starts right up, other times it does not right away.I checked to see if I had fuel pressure at the rail this morning before trying to start the car, and low and behold, there was none, I have all new injectors and no fuel leaks anywhere, also as I'm going up an incline, the motor does not seem to have full power, and I notice the rpm gauge going up and down a bit and the motor appears to be pulsating, is there a fuel pressure regulator in the line, my VIDA shows one near the fuel filter but I can't find anytrhing like that on my model??? ANY IDEAS? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, not familiar with the XC models, but based on mine and others experiences here, would suspect fuel pump and/or fuel filter. Another common failure mode is the fuel pump relay.

Has the fuel filter been replaced in the last 50K miles? If not, I would start there.

You also mentioned the fuel pressure regulator; on models I'm familiar with, this is on the fuel rail.

If you're into DIY diagnosis, we could probably walk you through it.

How many miles on the clock? My fuel pump just ckd out @ 170K+ miles last week.

 

Thanks for the reply...I just put a new pump and filter in about 2 months ago, car has 173,000, just installed new rail injectors and fuel regulator, found the rail not holding fuel pressure...put a check valve in the line....car 9is starting great but still has a lope going up a grade?

 

What do you mean you put a check valve in the line; which line? My cars have a fuel feed line (coming from the fuel pump) that supplies pressure to the rail, and then a fuel return line going back to the tank; this is downstream of the fuel pressure regulator on the rail.

What's your rail fuel pressure doing when it's "loping"?

 

I have no way of telling the fuel rail pressure while driving the car, I put a check valve in the fuel feed line just below the rail. Car is starting fine, although the lope is still there. All I know is that Before I put the check valve in, ther car was hard starting after it had sat overnight, and there was no fuel pressure in the rail. There are some BMW and Jags out there that have the same problem, the check valve eliminates the problem on them, so I tried it on mine. checking fuel pressure with car sitting still, I get approx. 30 to 32 lbs.

 

That's weird; pretty sure the fuel pump has a ck valve in it, so shouldn't need to add one. Was this an aftermkt pump by chance?

Do you have a manual for this model? Does it have the spec for the fuel pressure? Does your fuel pressure regulator have a vacuum line going to it? If so, what's the pressure do when you pull off that vac line?

 

I'll tell ya what's real weird! you have 2 lines to your rail, like my 98 v70, my 2000 only has the one, which is the feed, and no vacuum line on fuel pressure regulator, must work like a negative/positive diaphragm. But at any rate the wife has no trouble starting it anymore and it ran fine for me yesterday...took it out for a spin.

 

From reading other threads around here I have learned that the later models went to a Fuel Pressure Sensor in the rail. Signals from this sensor are processed by the ECM and then used to command the fuel pump on/off to maintain the correct pressure at the rail; at least that's how i infer it works.

And from these threads it appears this Fuel Pressure Sensor is problematic; not sure if the 2000 MY has it or not; might be worth looking into. If your car has it, this post might be relevant...

Thanks gdog for the time, it doesn't cover mine though, my rail has the small disk on the left side of the rail, no sensors though, the little disk, I replaced a short time ago, and the problem was still there, but now so far so good...not getting any complaints from the wife, however, it still does not seem quite right to me.
