Default Install of boost gauge and BOV

Hey, Im fairly new to modding Volvos... but as I said in another thread, I have recently purchased a 2000 V70R. Im looking to install a BOV on the car, but dont know how to go about it... Id also like to install a boost gauge (autometer) but need to know where the connections are to be done. If anyone could help me here, it would be greatly appreciated, thanx.

As far as a BOV goes get an HKS SSQV and have the flange welded to the Upper IC (Intercooler) Pipe.

Like this,
*Pictured is a TurboXS Type H-RFL. DO NOT buy this BOV they are prone to leaking get an HKS SSQV. You can get them for $160 shipped which is the best price your going to find. Unless you find a universial one used.

You picked a good gauge brand to go with. I have all Autometers and they are great. For a A-pillar pod go to gaugepods.com and for the gauge go to egauges.com

It is pretty simple you tape into a vaccum line. Look at this picture.
*On the right side of the intake manifold you will see a white line. Do you see it? If so you will see some vaccum lines there. There is a vaccum line on that intake manifold just "T" it off for your boost gauge and run everything through the firewall pass through.

About the BOV, though... thats all there is to it? Just weld it to there? maybe Im just unsure how they work, but it seems like it should be more complicated than that, lol... Ive worked on DSMs for a while, which have a stock (but ****ty) bov... and they were a bitch to install an aftermarket one in its place, lol. Is there a specific place that it needs to be in the uicp? where is that hose on the end there end up at?

Yes all you do is weld the HKS SSQV Aluminum flange to the Aluminum Upper IC Pipe. Then put the HKS SSQV on the flange and then run the vaccum line to from the same line you tapped into for your boost gauge. No there is no specific place to put it on the UICP but don't place it directly ontop as the hood might not close. I would do it like mine, which is basically on the side od the UICP.

You can see plainly in the second picture where my BOV vaccum line is being run to. Just trace it from the top of the BOV to the intake manifold. You will see a black vaccum line that runs the width of the intake manifold and in that line you will see something white, it is a "T" adapter and you will see another vaccum line running into that. That is where the vaccum line for the BOV is hooked up to.

Check out Defi gauges, they are much nicer than autometer. Look into the Greddy Type RS bov, very nice and quiet.
The TiAL 50mm is louder, but it is a great bov. It is what I currently run on my STi. It comes in all different colors, I went with blue.

All Volvo's that are turbocharged come with a CBV (Compressor Bypass Valve). This kind of acts like a BOV. However instead of venting the excess boost to the atmosphere it vents it back into the intake track. Now some aftermarket BOV's have this capability as well. But most people vent the BOV to the atmosphere.

When venting to the atmosphere your car will run RICH for a split second and other then that and the awsome sound a BOV makes that is all that will happen when you vent to the atmosphere.

Defi gauges are nice, but primo money. Autometer gauges are great gauges and can be had at great prices. Tial BOV's are great.

That is the OEM Upper IC pipe. It was painted black at one point in time.

I stripped the paint off and then cleaned it up. Then sanded the pipe and then polished it. Did the same thing with my Fuel Rail Cover and the secondary oil fill spot.

What BOV did you buy today? Where are you installing it at in the car?

HKS SSQV's are great BOV's. Hope you got it for cheap, they can sell new for outrageous prices. What year is your V70R? Um if a shop is doing the BOV for you no special notes. I had a shop do mine so I don't have any notes on it for you.

Yeah the R's have the blue cover. Depending on what year car yours is it isn't going to work with the CF version. I tried finding the CF one for my car. Found it says it will fit, but at least 10 people told me it wont fit because of this and that. So I never bought it.

If you want to polish your Upper IC pipe like mine, it isn't hard. Just time consuming. Will take you a day to do. I have a writeup about it and also I know where another writeup is.

The CF cover that is out there wont work with your car. It is only for 1998 and below cars. Sorry.

Upper IC Pipe Polishing

This is a writeup about polishing your Upper IC pipe, but it has to be made from Aluminum.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tools Needed:
1. Paint stripper, spray can kind.
2. Hard wire brush
3. Sandpaper (200/400/600/800/1000/1500/2000)
4. Steel wool
5. Metal Polish
6. Dish Soap and water
7. Screwdriver flat head
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Start by opening youe hood up and locating the Upper IC pipe. It will be the Aluminum pipe painted black that goes over your engine. BEFORE DOING THIS PROJECT MAKE SURE YOURS IS MADE FROM ALUMINUM or METAL.

2. Take the flat head screw driver and unscrew the two hose clamps that hold the IC pipe on. Then remove the IC pipe.

3. In a well ventilated area take the Pipe/Paint Stripper/Wire brush. Spray the pipe with the stripper and let it eat away at the black paint on the Upper IC pipe. Then take the wire brush and scrape off the paint. Keep doing this until the Upper IC pipe is just bare Aluminum.

4. Now clean off your IC pipe with a clean rag to get rid of other debrie.

5. Take the 200 grit sandpaper and sand start to sand the Upper IC Pipe. Do this for awhile all over the pipe and then move up to the higher grits if sand paper. After each time clean it off with the rag.

6. With the 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper your going to want to wet sand the pipe with these. Get a dish with water and soap in it, dish soap worls fine. Wet the sand paper well and start to sand the pipe. Keep doing this for awhile. Then move onto the 2000 grit paper and do the same thing. This will help polish and shine the Upper IC pipe really well and give it a good look.

7. After you have done this dry the pipe and let it dry for a little bit as you will soak the pipe in the tub of water to rise it off.

8. Take the steel wool and rub the pipe with this, this will also help ploish and shine the pipe.

9. With the rag wipe the pipe off.

10. Use the metal polish I used MOTHERS and it turned out great. Take the rag and or a new clean rag for sure and start to use the metal polish to polish the pipe. This is the last step basically. After you have rubbed the polish in small areas at a time wipe the polish off. Do this till the pipe is all polished.

11. If the inside of the pipe is still wet let it dry over night.

12. Reinstall on the car.

*During each cleaning, use water as well. It will be better if you do. Then dry it and go back to sanding.

Nice, good stuff... of course now Ill have to do that before I get the BOV welded to it.. How much should I expect the avg. shop to charge for the BOV install? Where Im going said like $50. Is that nominal? Also, what pressure is my turbo running? Is it astock Mitsu TD04 housing? Much like the hybrid T3/T4 my Talon runs?

$50-$150 is normal.

Your an R so I woul assume 10-15 PSI is stock. And it is a TD04HL turbo but I don't know which one.

Is there a way to add maybe a manual boost controller to up the boost a little? Can my motor handle it?
