Default V70 Intermittent Starting Problem

Have an 02 V70 2.4 (non turbo) w/~60k. It would not start one day -- it would crank, had spark and fuel pressure but would not run. Cleaned the Throttle Body and still no luck. The fuel pressure is fine and fuel pump runs. Has spark. There was one code for the ETM with stating a high reading. Reset everything, cleared the codes, etc. Still would not start. Tried all three keys for the car too. Towed to the Volvo dealer. Had the software updated and it ran fine. One week later...it would not start again. Tried each day for the next three days and still the same problem -- cranks but will no start. No check engine codes. Towed back to the dealer. It started for the service writer and tech. The tech ran all the codes and found nothing in any of the systems. He checked the fuel pressure and its fine. When the car starts it runs fine.

The underling problem is that there is not fuel being released through the fuel injectors since there is spark and it cranks. It will fire momentarily on starting fluid. No trouble codes.

Any ideas?

Does the immobilizer prevent starting via the starter or fuel system (will a failure in the system still allow the car to crank)?

**Can the ETM fail without giving an off a trouble code?**

Many thanks to any responses.

I would say Immoblizer problem.
It will let it crank but not start.
There will only be a code in the immoblizer when it doesn't start.

Do you think its the immobiliser unit itself or could it also be the sensor on the ignition?

OK Tech,
I've got an important question for you. Does an immobilizer problem ( antenna ring defect or key) cause a no crank situation? In other words, does it prevent the engine from turning over and not starting OR does it create a no crank situation. It must be one or the other but not both. I replaced my antenna ring today and still have the same on and off again no crank condition with either of two keys. Got the immobilzer message on the dash again but not sure if I believe it. Starter?? Please help. Scott

It all depends on the Year I forget the exact cut off.
Some will crank and no start others will not crank.

The best way to find out if it is the starter is to wire a light bulb to the small wire at the starter and ground.
It will light everytime you crank it.
And if it lights and doesn't crank then it is the starter.
But if it doesn't light then you know it is something with the immoblizer.
