Volvo V70 Engine Service Message
Hi,
My 2002 2.4 V70 has suddenly started posting the message "Engine System Service Req" but with no service light (i only recently had it serviced).
The car is running fine, but the message and the orange warning triangle is extremely annoying.
If i re-set it via the trip meter the message returns after a few days.
Any ideas?

I have had the car for 3 years and never seen it before, now it comes on every few days after i have cleared it.
After the latest re-set i notice the fault code 44 is coming up in the message window. I have been unable to find anything on the web that gives a clue to these codes. Does anyone know where i might find them?
Thanks

Just yesterday I reset that message on 06 V70 2.5t. Using the instructions found on this site, after using "search" function. The first listing gave instructions for various years, which do differ from older models which need a reset tool to the newest, where resetting is simple. I followed them and the "service engine" message and the yellow triangle light both went out. Hidden, sort of, in the owner's manual, was the information that this message and the light are keyed to the odometer and go on when 7500 has elapsed since the last reset. So it is just a reminder, not a warning.
Your dealer could do it in about one minute or less (it took me two tries since I stupidly pushed the dash light dimmer rather than the trip odo reset!) and I was done in less than two minutes. Have no idea what a dealer might charge.

High revs while starting
then normal idle. This car too shows the 44 in the lower left window. I can reset it but it comes back almost immediately. Have checked and replaced all vacuum hoses. Car shows NO OBD2 codes. the 44 is something volvo specific but not much luck finding someone who actually knows what it means, even amongst the volvo factory trained master mechanics. I have a new ETM and have watched it work on top of engine before install and can see throttle position operate on laptop diagnostic equipment. Has anyone actually gotten this looked into at a dealer and received a straight answer as to what the 44 indicates?

thanks ES6T
that is the first straight answer about the 44 message from a qualified source I have heard yet and exactly what others on this site need to see.
I have played with the cars sensors, loostening them up a little and or completely disconnecting them to see if the ECM notices, and it is swift to generate an obd2 code for almost all of these, within a few seconds. Thats why I am a little surprised that there is no code generated for what is clearly an error in air/fuel ratio calculation at startup.
Since the ECM calculates how long to hold the injectors open by looking at the temperature, MAP and MAF sensors, I ended up looking into these sensors. I found the response voltage from the MAP sensor stuck at about 2.0v with key on or idling, it did not change. Should be around 5v with key on at sea level, and around1-1.5v idling. So the sensor is within its range (so as not to trigger an obd2 code) but not where is should be. This may solve my racing at startup problem. I will let you know.
