Default Where is the ECU and how to remove it

Hi,
I bought a Volvo V70 AWD 1999 and I want to know where is the ECU(Computer of the car) and how I can remove it. With pictures it will help me out. And I want to know the same thing for the MAF sensor.
Thank you for your help

It is on the left side of the engine bay in side a black box. You need a tool to get it out. See attachment.

MAF is on the intake, right after the airfilter box, going to the Throttle mody.
Example of MAF:

Also if you replace it the Dealer needs to download software into the car to make it run after you replace it. It will not run if you just put another one in there.

You do not need the special tool. It will make things easier if you use it but you don't need it.

There are two slides on either side of the ECU underneath it. You will need to push these forward one slightly at a time. Don't get one two far forward and the other not. Once they are far enough forward the ECU will put straight up and out.

I got all the housing in my ECU compartment removed and do not see any leavers whatsoever. I drive a C70 Turbo (99/00) and have 2 ECU's, one for tranny and one for electrics. They both sit on a white plastic base and for the life of me I can't see a simple way to remove the electrics one. A diagnostics test keeps showing turbo booster sensor not getting enough voltage? hence the constant EML. I'll probably laugh at myself when someone shows me the easy way to remove the ECU. I have a Haynes manual that describes the ECU with a silver leaver for release but mine does not have this leaver/s. Any help from anyone is desperately needed. Cheers, Ifor

1. That HAYNES manual is more then likely for a 1998 70 series and not 1999+.

2. To remove the ECU you either need the special tool which was posted before in this very thread.

Or...

Or you could do what I did and push the PURPLE or FUSHA colored tabs towards the front of the car. One at a time making sure to keep them at about the same point. Don't push them all the way out, just enough to get the ECU out. It worked for me and it will work for you. FYI, I own a 1999 s70. It will be the same as your C70.

Do you know If we can replace the ECU by a used one ? Volvo told me not!!!!! And I don't really trust them. Both ETC and Check engine lights are on when the motor starts. I Replaced 3 times the throttle body when the motor runned well without significant trouble, but the ETC light was still ON. changing the Throttle body never turned-off my ETC light and I know that I need to program the New Throttle, so I put back my old one. Since trouble is WORST, My S70 doesn't want to Start, if it starts, motor rattles and stops. I Suspect ECU...

I've changed my motor 6 months before the trouble appeared but this used motor Runned greatly for at least 6 months.
Do you know if an other computer exist under the dashbaord for the alarm and the passlock KEycode reader ? Dealer told me yes and could not be replaced by an used one! Don't really believe it!

Since it sounds like you have a 99 or newer no you cannot just swap it out. The ECU is programmed to only that car.

what was the final result of your siotuation. I have 01 C70 Coupe and i'm having Loss of power issues. Talked to previous owner and he said he had the same issue...bought a used PCM but could not get anyone to Reprogram it.....I too find it strange that you can have your ECU programmed for an Upgrade but not reprogramed. I want to remove mine so I can try a simple fix that i read online...try cleaning the tabs with contact cleaner. any suggestions???

Default volvo ecm

I have a 2004 volvo xc90 t6. The tranny seems to slip and has been doing it for a while. The dealer tried to download the upgrade to the ecm and said about half of the ecm was not functioning. Does this slippage sound like an ecm problem. I would like to replace the ecm myself. I see I can buy them reconditioned and preprogrammed on the internet. Can someone tell me where the ecm is located and is this a job I can tackle myself. I have tools and I'm not afraid to use them.
