Default Aftermarket Back-up Camera

Hello,

I have a 2011 XC60 and am wondering if there are any aftermarket accessories available, such as an integrated back-up camera or navigation system that will use what's already in the car (it is pre-wired for the navigation system). The dealer's pricing is insane!!! Any help would be appreciated.

Ditto!! New forum member here. Own 2011 XC60 that came with color screen but without Nav package that included camera. Wife really wants camera [her car ]. Went to dealer and was quoted price of $1,600 to have it installed!!!

Dealer would not fully clarify what "pre-wired" meant, but I gathered that it meant car was equipped with the appropriate video screen and system [it came with full color screen that displays all manner of menus and radio outputs including satellite, plus can show a DVD when car not in motion]. The hook-up of camera in rear just over the licence plate in place of one of the plate lights is normal.

Parts for doing this can't be much more than a $100. 4 hours labor for someone who knows what they are doing even at $150 an hour shop rate would still make this a $700 job instead of a $1,600 job. [Dealer said if it needed the color screen, price would have been $2,500]

I intend to solicit bids from 2 or 3 compentent independent repair shops that claim they "know" about Volvos to see if any can do the work, and what they charge. We'll see what I find out, and I will report.

Would still appreciate an informed Volvo expert to weigh in on what, exactly, is involved in installing this capability on this car. Not that I would ever attempt it myself --- but would like to be as informed as possible regarding the actual "effort" required to retro-fit a 2011 or later XC60 with a good backup camera function.

Cheers!

PS -- Suspect dealers price it this way to protect the sellability of the NAV package on these cars which is over $2,500. As the NAV function is not worth this price [when one can by a very capable Garmin for a fraction], if dealers provided the backup camera function on its own at a "reasonable" cost, they would NEVER sell their NAV package!

What ever happened to this? I want to do the same. I passed on a '10 xc60 3.2 with 60k miles fully loaded platinum tech climate... For a '12 xc60 T6 with 6500 miles with premium plus and climate. I want the backup camera but as of the last week, my wife decided she hates the garmin breaking the serenity of the dash... And wants the nave too. I'm scheduled for the remote start and polestar (my gift to me) and since its gonna be tax time soon, I might as well see what's up with the backup and nav

I found this btw

Default Aftermarket Back-up Camera -- Update

I had no success in finding a competent location to install a backup camera for my 2011 XC60. I was recommended from shop to shop for a couple weeks -- nobody wanted to do the job to install a camera in the designated location just above the license plate and have it work with the already installed Volvo electronics and LCD screen. Two shops offered to install cameras that displayed in a new rear view mirror --- and that price was not cheap either @ around $900.

The dealer quoted $1600 to do this. Complete rip-off. The parts can't be more than a couple hundred bucks -- camera and cables --- and even if the labor were for 2 people 4 hours @ $100 per, that still comes up to half the cost quoted.

Sigh.....I'll continue to look, but it's on the back burner. Wife wants it, but agrees that @ the current price, it's not worth it. Not even close.

Thanks for the updates. I called NavTool, who makes the video interface to see if the product would be a good fit - and it will. Unfortunately, they told me that the product is currently in the beta testing phase and therefore one would need to be in NY so that they could install it and troubleshoot if necessary; they will not sell any other way for about 3 months, which is when they expect the product to be available to the market.

I live in NY. I saw they are in Staten Island (not exactly the hotbed for tech, but what do I know) any how. I'll give them a call and try to set something up.

Hopefully, I'll have good news for us all.

Any luck there? I have a S60 and am looking for after market rear view camera too. No way it should be $xxxx for that from the dealer.

Look at those folks in Benz forum:
DIY: Rear-View Camera under $200 - MBWorld.org Forums

We should be able to do exactly the same. However, the first step to enable rear view camera is not easy to find on Volvo. After that it should be same procedure.

Anyone knows how to get it set? May need the VIDA software? But it is easy to find on Ebay:

Me too interested. Apparently dealer can add camera to existing system.

OK, this only work for 2007-2009 Volvos with built in NAV - the DVD player in the trunk (boot) built by Denso/Navtec:

Go to NAV-TV Corporation: RGB2+
That's the converter that intercepts the Navigation signal when the car is in Reverse. It's about US$350.

Then go to Ebay and search in Motors for Volvo rear camera - there are about 10 companies selling what looks like the same camera from US$16 - US$25. I bought the $16 one - it works great and even has color grid lines.

If you're not handy with wiring, go to a good custom audio/alarm shop, not your regular mechanic. The installation is not terrible if you are good at auto electronics installations. No harder, but no easier than a custom amp/sound system installation.

Looks like it's been a year since the last update here on this topic. Does anyone have an update? I did not do the backup cam on my '15 XC60 and am beginning to regret it...

I had the Navtool camera installed earlier this year by an independent car electronics shop for about $800. Works fine, after they spent a week troubleshooting. Turns out the software needed an update to be compatible with Windows 7.

Or you can just swivel your heads around, save yourselves a lot of money and hassle.

True! But if you own an XC60, then you'll know why the camera is really helpful...! It would be very easy to hit something low and behind you. Spinning around or using your mirrors wouldn't help! Huge blind spot.

I just bought an XC60, and had it installed at the volvo dealer. Yes, it was 1627. It's worth, though.

Default Installation of aftermarket back-up camera

I have successfully installed an aftermarket back-up camera in my 2008 Volvo S80 with built in Navtek/Denso navigation.

I have documented this is a MS Word document with photos, but it is too big to attach & I dont know how this site allows large documents. If you want it, contact me and I will email you the document. My emaill address is the same as my user name.

Garmin has a wireless backup camera that synchs with certain Gamin NAV units. If your vehicle does NOT have built-in NAV, this might be a good solution. A little pricey since you need to buy both the camera kit and the compatible Garmin NAV, but it looks pretty simple.
