Starter pendix moves but no cranking follows
The car - XC70 2002 120kw diesel 4wd automatic
Problem - When trying to start, the starter pendix will move, but the starter will not start cranking. So only the pendix moves back and forth on ignition.
What have I done so far -
Bannery is fine
Starter relay is fine
Ground should be fine (tested with crocodiles)
Starter will do everything when given electricity directly
So basically - everything works up until it is time to crank the motor.

Either power is going through the starter motor windings or it's not. The starter takes a lot of power, so maybe you can guess that just by things getting warm.
So probably, no power is going, which means you have a set of contacts internal to the starter that did not make up, or you have a bad connection in the "big" current path, but other circuits are still working. Starter brushes could be bad. Either way, no big deal to fix.
If power was going through the starter, but it wasn't turning the engine, that could be the engine is locked up, or more typically a dead battery that's not so dead that it can't operate the solenoid. I don't think that is the case, though. I am in the USA, and we don't get the diesels, so I admit total incompetence and you should consider the source.
