Default 2005 XC90 Immobilizer See Manual after engine swap

I have a 2005 Volvo XC90 2.9L and recently installed a new engine here in my shop we are a performance shop and don't usually deal with Volvos, but I have never ran into anything that I can't do on my own as I am an ASE Certified Master Tech going on 10 years now. So I took a chance and did what I could. The engine is in and everything is connected, but the issue is that we are getting a message that reads Immobilizer See Manual and the vehicle will not start. I have done everything I can find on Alldata, Mitchell, and/or the internet and we can't get her to start. I am leaning towards either a new immobilizer antenna or a computer reflash as we read a TSB that suggested it's possible for the computer to lose it's programming causing this issue. Is there anyone who has had this problem or knows what we can do. I don't have a VIDA so if the only fix is the reflash then we are gonna have her towed to the dealer, any help would be great! Thanks!

Default 2005 xc90 engine replacement

Hello 95RioRedCobra,

We are about to do a engine replacement for my 2005 volvo xc90, and I was wondering if you (or anybody else) have any special advice for that.

This is a very complex car, and I am afraid something can wrong regarding computers, sensors and all that stuff.

Any help will be greately appreciated.

Greetings from Costa Rica.

Charlie

Default engine swap

Actually, in my own case, I didn't have any problem. Took off the original engine, put the other one (an used) with the same model, and everything went perfectly. It took longer than expected because the complexity of vacuums and tubes inside, nevertheless it practically started since the very first time on the first key turn.

I think a good ecm scanner could help the process if any problem shows up.

I wonder what fixed 95RioRedCobra to fix it.

Looking for an update as I have this exact same problem.... Anyone?? I installed an engine from a s60 but it's the same part number, etc.... Now the engine will crank for 4-5 revs then shut down and engine imobilizer flashes on the dash. Whats interesting is if I turn the key to on, then delay, then roll to start nothing happens. If I go from off to start in one motion it'll crank then stop.... any help appreciated! ed

I've run into this issue on vehicle that have been torn down and the fuel rail is empty. A lot of cranking and no fuel I believe causes the ECM to think that the immobilizer has shut off the fuel supply.

Leave the car sit for a couple of minutes. Remove the key, try again later.

From my experience, any excessive cranking will display the message. In my case, once we got adequate fuel pressure in the rail the car started. When the fuel rail is empty, a lot of air has to be pushed out to get fuel to be pressurized. On the old fuel pump with a return line, the air pocket was gone quickly.

Now, with a single feed fuel line, you just have to work it.

thanks tony, will try that... I don't remember hearing the fuel pump hum when I turn the key on.... Can't remember if I could hear it before the engine swap.... Is it normally loud enough to hear?? Should I hold the fuel rail bleed valve open when trying to start??

Absolutely not! Don't mess with fuel like that!

Let the car sit, crank again. Make sure that the battery is being charged to not run it dead. Give it a few tries.
