Radiator fan ON right from start-up
Hello XC90 owners,
My 2004 2.5T cooling fan starts up right after starting the engine. It is winter, so this is a problem somewhere (even in summertime fan should go on much later than start-up).
Got the code P0111 which is related to intake air temperature. I would think fan goes on based on coolant temp and not air temp. But still has to be a linkage between the code and fan malfunction.
Anybody had similar issues?
Thank you,
Csaba

Hi,
I have the the exact same car and the same problem as yours where the cooling fan comes on as soon as as you start the car. I am also getting code P0111 from time to time. Please pot back if you have found the solution. SO far I have replaced the coolant temp sensor but nothing has changed.

Hi,
I replaced the IAT sensor, which is for Intake Air Temperature sensor, at least as I know. Around 50 dollars.
But practically the IAT sensor is the coolant temp sensor.
Now things are fine.
Make sure you clean out the code, i.e. get rid of check engine light.
Otherwise things wont change.

Hi,
it seems like this air temp sensor is a very confusing part. I doing some research, i have found out that this part is also know as the boost pressure sensor and that the map sensor is integrated in it.
The air temp sensor is different than the coolant temp sensor.
I think i will try replacing the boost pressure sensor/air intake temp sensor and see what happens.
Thanks

Hi,
Yesterday I noticed a few other related symptoms. First of all the car was sluggish, and it drank half a tank of gas like nothing ive ever experienced. When pushing on the gas pedal, it doesnt want to take off right away. it requires more push of the pedal than usual. Also the cooling fan was running all the time. No check engine light. out of curiosity, I hooked up my scanner and sure enough there was code P0111.
I deleted the code, and the car drove like new once again. Power was restored, cooling fan was off and pedal feel returned to its usual normal.
Then today while waiting for my coffee at the drive thru, I heard the cooling fan turn on and immediately i tested the gas pedal to see if anything was unusual and the same sluggishness is back.
I will replace the Boost Pressure sensor and see what that does.
I am curious as to which part you replaced.
is it this............Volvo Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP Sensor) Bosch 0261230090 | FCP Euro
or this.............Volvo Engine Coolant Fan Temperature Switch - FAE 8653103 | FCP Euro
BTW, seems like you are in Ontario. Which city?

Now that i think of it, You probably replaced the coolant temperature sensor located by the thermostat just like i did and then cleared the codes which cause the symptoms to disappear.
Seems like both our xc90's need the boost pressure sensor replaced.
I will replace that on mine and report back.

Hi,
I live in Hamilton.
Replaced the following:
eEuroparts - IAT Sensor - # 8653103
Is called IAT sensor there, but is the same thing, really a coolant sensor.
So this did not solve the problem.
Then the next thing would be that MAP sensor?
How difficult is to replace, where is it?
Where do you get your parts from?
Thanks,
-Csaba
P.S.
So far I did not notice performance problems.

As i had suspected, both of us replaced the same part which is the first thing anyone would recommend replacing when the fan is cooling fan stays on.
I have alldata diy and according to that the first thing to do is to check the boost pressure sensor make sure the connector is clean and there is no corrosion. If after checking the connector the problem is still there, then the boost pressure sensor must be replaced. The MAP sensor is integrated into the boost pressure sensor.
the boost pressure sensor is located on the the inlet of the intercooler on the driver side. The easiest way to get to it is to remove the driver side headlight assembly and you will see the intercooler inlet and the boost pressure sensor.
I cleaned the connector today with electrical contact cleaner and i will see if that works or not. If not I will be ordering the sensor from FCP Groton.

I took a photo of the location of the sensor. I will see if i can post it after work.

Any news with the vehicle / fan / sensor?
That sensor is the same as below, if I am not mistaken.

yup that is the sensor I am talking about. Since removing the connector and cleaning it, 4 days ago, I had the code come twice. I have already ordered a new sensor, so hopefully that will work.
what kind of gas mileage are you getting in the city? I am getting around 13.5 kms per litre city according to the display.
Per tank, its around 450 kms which is close to what it should be I believe. Havent gone on a road trip to find out what i get on the highway but im guessing it should 600-650.

My 2006 Volvo XC70 have the exact same issue with the cooling fan constantly running, and I replaced the MAP sensor as you mentioned. The issue is solved. Thank you for your post.
I drilled a hole at the steel plate on the top of the sensor, and make it easier to access the screw on the sensor.
the cooling fan start running again, and the AC is not working too. I try to find out what happened.
