Default Transmission is still in neutral even when in "P"

I have an 2005 V8 XC90 and suddenly (never happened before) the car remains in neutral even though the transmission is clearly in "P"ark. Furthermore, when I put the transmission into "D"rive I get alot of slippage (as if the car is still partially in neutral). I think there might be a linkage problem. Everything at the transmission appears "OK." Any ideas? Advice? If it is linkage - anyone know how to get the transmission console inside the car out? How do I remove the the shifter?

Thx,

I'm not sure about the XC90 but on most transmissions there are detents on the shifter shaft in the transmission which need to be fully engaged in order for the transmission to work properly. maybe the cable from the shifter has slipped and the shifter shaft is now between gears. I would check at the shifter shaft first by loosening the cable off then checking to see if the shaft is between detents. Just pay attention when you tighten up the cable making sure the position of the shifter matches where the transmission transmission truly is-ie. Park(shifter)=Park(transmission).
Hope this helps!!
