Sorry, nothing between for the pre 2006 models. FM transmitter or Dension Gateway 500 are the only options...

Get a new radio it will cost less and work much better in the long run.

You could look at DICE and I have used them in the past, but it was hardlined into the cd changer. I think I have seen some problems on here with replacing the radio so if you go that way just check it out first.

You can't just replace the radio. The sound system is a bunch of units spread around in the car and connected by the fiber-optic MOST-network. The "radio" you see on the dash is more or less just a control panel (infotainment control module).

By all means, it's doable, but it's quite a bit of work.

DICE is a Volvo diagnostic tool, I really don't see how that would help.

DICE Electronics LLC - DRIVE | LIVE | ACCESSORIZE - G2 Cradle

Hummmm, think your confused about DICE, check out the link and you'll find out that this is not Volvo diagnostic tool, if it was it's very popular with BMW, Merc, Audi owners.

ye....just too bad that "dice electronics" don't offer anything for these cars. In Volvo terms "dice" is usually a reference to Volvo's diagnostic tool - google it.

but, as previously stated, you need an FM Transmitter (which has sucky quality, but cost like $10), a Dension Gateway 500 (fiber optic integration, perfect audio quality, $4-500+install) or get a 2006-> model which already has an AUX-connector.

Can you buy a salvaged unit and install it? I've read that people do this with no adverse results?

No you can't. Not in these cars anyway.

Default Dension's the way to go

I think the best solution is the Dension - which is what I have in my 2004 XC90. I looked into replacing the stock radio with a nice double-DIN 3rd-party radio, but that would have cost roughly the same as the Dension, likely even more if you add all the 3rd-party accessories to integrate with the steering wheel controls and the AM/FM antenna.

The Dension works really well, and I heartily recommend it. Installed it myself in about 30 minutes. There are videos on Youtube that show you how to do the install, which makes it even easier.

Bottom-line, you'll spend at least ~$400 to get your iPod integrated, be it via the Dension or by getting an all new head-unit.

VADIS _was_ the diagnostic software until 2006, when it changed name to VIDA. This is however the software part. The physical tool is called DiCE.

Good deal. I didn't realize your CD player still worked. It was busted on mine, so I couldn't listen to anything except AM/FM. :-)
