99 V70 ETM and Catalytic Converter problem
 
I have a 99 V70 wagon. The ETM was just replaced at a volvo dealer. Now they say that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced as well. I have poured a lot of money into this car. Last year, a new timing belt, brakes front and back. And now this. Does a failing ETM lead to a failed catalytic converter? And if I do make these repairs, are there other issues that are related that might come up? The car has 185,000 miles on it. I'm wondering if its worth it. Could use some advice.

I'm feeling your pain.

I had ETM failure too, sort of.

The exhaust cam timing solenoid failed with the brake pedal position sensor giving an inaccurate reading.

I had replaced my air filter with an K and N factory style (unrelated, ish).

The K and N has oil on it that had coated my MAF causing an inaccurate reading until it's short demise.

This caused the system to run rich. and the ETM was idle hunting a bit, causing the O2 (wide band) sensor to fail. The extra engine vibration caused the aging exhaust donuts at the cat to fail. This caused too much weight on the exhaust bracket with extreme 90 degree elbow to crack. causing cool air to interrupt the flow of exhaust at the turbo, etc. ect........

My wife had to have the car towed. The car would not allow more than 1500 rpm throttle input at this time.

That to say this:

The simple answer, yes, probably, unless the ETM was a part of preventive maintenance :)

I replaced the ETM with an;

XeMODex $600.00
vvct solenoid $130.00
both O2 sensors $190.00
two exhaust donuts $18.00
MAF $100.00
Brake pedal Position Sensor $120.00
Muffler shop Re-Weld of the bracket on elbow $40.00

I did the labor :) that was cheap! ish.....

It looks like IPDUSA has actual Cats from $330-$420, not too bad except if you are in CA. I wouldn't go with a universal and do weld splice, factory cat/ bosal if possible.
