Key Fob / Remote Programming

My car arrived with a single key and no remote. I thought I could live without a remote, but since there is no key slot in the rear lift gate, I've changed my opinion on this.

My friend who is a Volvo fanatic sent me this information, "Volvo V70 Key Fob Remote. This key fab will need to be programmed. If you have a red security light in the dash of your vehicle, you will be able to manually program this remote. If you do not have a red security light in the dash of your vehicle then you will have to take this to the dealer for programming. To manually program this remote, ensure that all doors, hood, and trunk are closed. Insert key into ignition, turn key to position #2 and back to off at least 5 times in ten seconds. The LED indicator should start to flash, leave ignition on. Once indicator starts you have 15 seconds to program remote. Press the lock button on the remote. The indicator LED lighting for about 2 seconds acknowledges the programming."

My mechanic thought that this only worked on the 850 cars, and not on my 2000 V70.

So who is right? I do have a blinking red security light on top of the dash by the windshield, so does that mean I can just buy a remote like this Volvo Remote Key Transmitter (With Panic Button) - Genuine Volvo 9166200 | FCP Euro and program it myself as the guide above says? I attempted to do the key dance routine to see if I saw a LED flash, and I didn't....so I suspect the mechanic was right.

im pretty sure anything after 99 needs to have to be taken to the dealer to be programmed.

OK thanks. I assumed I was out of luck.
