Possible Purchase - 2000 V70
 

As mentioned I am looking at a 2000 V70 XC AWD SE. It's the turbo car and has 198k. Has records. Recently done:

• Timing belt
• Battery
• Boost Sensor
• Map Sensor

Are there any things I need to watch out for? This would be a daily for me. Please give me your real opinion on this one

Good start. How's the AC functioning? Common problem area is the clutch gap - where the AC will work on cold start but will kick off after 5-10 minutes on a warm day. How's the transmission shifting? Any record of fluid changes? Hows the oil look - peek inside the filler cap to look for any sludge (staining is normal) as sludge can muck up the PCV an the VVT gears (variable valve timing). Any history? Any driving noises - bearings/transfer case whining? clunks going over speed bumps (ie strut bearings/sway bar end links)? Big ticket fix items would be transmission/transfer case issues and AC Evaporator (way inside dash). If it got fresh oil regularly, the engine is good for 300K+

THere are good resources here and on youtube about what to look for. The biggie is the timing belt, and you have that sorted. There is a simple test for the PCV system (place thin latex glove over the oil filler tube: inflates =bad, drawing into engine = good. Crankcase pressure if bad enough can cause seals to fail and oil to leak.

If all good, and you have service records and can sense that the car has been cared for, not ignored, then look at the price. How are the tires?

I just bought a 98 2.5T. good service records, but it looks like no-one ever, or at least not in a long time, ever changed the cabin air filter. It was an amazing tray of nuts, seeds, leaves and dirt. Thankfully, the engine air filter looked quite new.
