Speedo In-op

Hi folks. In early Nov., I bought a '98 V70 AWD, 140kmi. I put 15kmi on it by the end of the yr.. Spent the last 2 weeks in the body shop (thanks, Bambi). A few days before impact, the speedo was dead for 10 or so miles, but just once. Was fine when I drove off again. The only thing I'd done that was at all a "rarity" was to back up for a short distance. So, today while bringing it from shop, I stopped to run an errand. Started back up, no speedo. Stayed inop all the way home. I haven't driven anywhere since, so it may be on again in the morning. I saw it mentioned elsewhere here (in answer to a similar question for another model Volvo) that the "electronic pick-up wire @ the differential may be faulty". Is this a common thing and fixable at the diff., or a sign that the unit is on the way out?
Thanks for any ideas/input. I'm no wrench, so this car should be interesting. I'll have several more questions about it very soon.

I know this is an older post but... Your ABS module is probably going bad. If the ABS module is dead, speedo is affected. I know the speedo won't work while the thig is removed. Getting it rebuilt is pretty inexpensive and worth the money.

early V70 speedo

Thank you for your reply, rmmagow. I'm in the middle of a several-thousand-mile roadtrip with the car, and it's a given that the speedo will drop out at least several times a day. Sometimes it is from start-up, other times it just blinks off (which of course disconnects the cruise control, instantly grabbing my full attention!). Usually it will rekindle itself after I pull over, shut down, and re-start. Occasionally, it takes a time or three.

Thanks again for getting back to me on this thing. I'll be looking into a fix on my return. You know, it's been awhile since I've had a car with some personality. I'm beginning to really like this boat...err, estate! I spent today zipping up, down, and around the Colorado Rockies. Fresh struts sure make a difference! :)
