Default Bad cat...replacement source?

So on a recent trip my 1999 XC70 Wagon started losing power...and eventually I had to stop. Turns out the cats are shot and have severely clogged my exhaust system.

New cats are insane...like $1800. Any ideas where I can get cheaper? What about used? Also, what if I cut them out, hollow and replace? Will car run right?

Its a good old car but not worth dropping a grand or more into for exhaust work. Any ideas/leads greatly appreciated.

Thx!

gz

I would suggest a used exhaust from a u pull it junkyard. If you hollow out the cat the CEL will be on; plus, the guts of the cat are not easy to get at unless you cut the cat out and then reweld it back in. I haven't had too much luck with aftermarket cats.
