2002 V70 XC no start after adding oil
 
Any advice on engine running not starting after adding oil ?
Added oil was waiting at oil change shop and started motor started to run rough sputtering. Turned off and wont start now. Thanks in advanced

Adding oil would have nothing to do with an engine stalling. No start conditions are related to fuel/air, spark and compression. Something else has happened while you were waiting that needs to be triaged. Start by having the car scanned for any stored OBD2 fault codes. I'd be inclined to think fuel first. ie got fuel pressure? Do you hear the fuel pump kick on? Next is spark. testing this varies whether your car has a distributor or direct coil on plug but a tech can test for power to the coil(s). For air, you have the MAF sensor and the ETM (electronic throttle mechanism). You can try unplugging the MAF and try to start again to see if anything changes. As to the ETM, they are a common point of failure. Check out the xemodex web site for how to do diagnostics on an ETM. Finally there is compression. About the only thing you can do here is check to make sure the timing belt is intact and didn't jump timing. Not a likely scenario but it can happen.

No start update 02 V70
 
Hello forum
Went to pick up vehicle after parked overnight at shop after getting oil changed and the vehicle started with no problem. Message was reduced engine performance before pickup it is not showing that message but is showing message about alarm servicing. Could that have been the problem? Parts store explained how to reset for that. I did and the vehicle drove and started fine the next two days. I was driving and the check engine light came on went to get read and was p0456. So I changed the fuel cap. Light is on and while turning corner engined died as if ran out of gas. Attempted to start and would not the same as before. It turns over a little then shuts off. I let the vehicle sit for about 10 minutes and started up with out ant issues and drove rest of the day. Just started vehicle to check engine light and its on.

The P0456 is a small evap leak code. typically this can point to an issue with the gas cap, purge valve or the evap hose that runs from the purge valve all the way back to the charcoal cannister. I had a smoke test done to find a tear in the hose midway under my S40 - seems plausible to me that when the shop did the oil change (ie putting the car on a lift or jacking it up), they did something to disrupt that hose. Normally this doesn't cause a fuel delivery issue but I believe there's also a check valve in that system that should be replaced when the hose is checked/repaired.

I have been researching about replacing the PEM. Could my no start be from that? Where is my PEM on my vehicle? Also replacing alarm batteries or unit for "Service Alarm" message. Will that prevent starting and cause engine to stall? Thank you.

I don't believe a 2002 has a PEM. (2003 was the first year?) Do you have a fuel pressure sensor on the end of the injector rail? Or just a valve to check fuel pressure? No pressure sensor means you don't have a PEM. Your fuel pump runs at full speed all the time. And Yes a bad PEM can prevent starting, the fuel pump won't run. They rarely go bad -they do corrode when left mounted to the right side of the gas tank near the rr tire. The alarm service will not prevent the car from starting - However with a full scan you can determine the alarm cause and it's status.

You should start with a reasonable, rational, diagnostic process (not guessing at PEMs)

What codes are stored? (in all the control units, not just the ECM)
Do you have Compression? Does the engine sound normal or sound like it's spinning over faster than it used to?
Any gas in the car? (many cars have been towed in for lack of gas, and many techs have failed to check that first)
What is the fuel pressure? (attach gauge to fuel rail, spins engine over with starter, Fuel gauge sells for $15 at harbor freight) Do you get a solid gas stream, or is it full of air bubbles?
Do you have a spark? (remove a coil, insert a spark plug and ground the spark plug, spins engine - do you see a spark?)

Check out RobertDIY's youtube vid on how to measure fuel pressure (the Gen 1 s40s are like the 850/S70s with a shrader valve on the end of the rail to plug the gauge into...)
