Blinker out warning, but all blinkers work! Going nuts!

Right blinker works fine.

Whenever I put the left blinker on, it blinks in hyper-fast mode and I get the "turn signal failure" message on the dash.

The thing is ... all the blinkers on the left side light up fine! WTH!!!

I'm stumped - does this mean I should be looking for a new relay?

Nope, it's either a bulb or socket issue. If the rear bulb lights, the front bulb and/or socket is the most likely (and common) cause.

So since all bulbs light up, which one do I start with? Is there a common failure part?

What am I looking for? It seems the problem would be hard to diagnose since the bulb lights up so there is a good connection being made.

The rear bulb only has one filament. So of it is lighting up, it is fine.

The front bulbs have two filaments, as they act as side markers when the turn signal is not activated.

The socket is a common failure, so when this happens I usually sell the bulb and socket to prevent future problems. You can swap the bulb and/or socket from the other side to test. The socket is only about $12 and the bulb is only about $3. You can probably get the bulb cheaper at a parts store though.

Do you know a good source for the socket? I just scoured IPD and I can't find anything except the bulb.

The dealer. Not sure anyone makes an aftermarket one.

I think I found one:

2001 Volvo V70 Turn Signal Lamp Socket 8662985

That's it, for more than the dealer would charge.

Platinum52 Feb 15, 2013 08:39 AM

Wow, an item that would be cheaper at the dealer? I'm gonna just stop at the dealer then.

ES6T Feb 15, 2013 10:56 AM

Yep, should be about $12 if I remember correctly. Its been a while since I sold one though.

Platinum52 Feb 15, 2013 01:49 PM

I got one today, might have been $13 - either way, not bad.

Platinum52 Feb 25, 2013 12:27 PM

Yep! That fixed it.

ES6T Feb 25, 2013 01:37 PM

Thanks for the update, glad you got it fixed
